…says,”the prolonged Monday sit-at-home had been abolished with immediate effect.

ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Anambra State Government has issued an executive order ending the closure of schools on Mondays as a result of the sit-at-home practice.

The government warned that any teacher or non-teaching staff who fails to report to work on Mondays will either receive only 20 per cent of their salary or forfeit it entirely.

The directive was contained in a letter dated January 22, 2026, signed by the Secretary of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Loveline Mgbemena.

In the letter, Mgbemena instructed all permanent board members, education officers in charge of the 21 local government areas, zonal directors and departmental heads to immediately notify staff under their supervision and ensure strict compliance.

She explained that the decision followed a state executive council retreat held on January 21, 2026, presided over by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

According to the directive, any tutorial or non-tutorial staff who fails to attend school or office on Mondays will face salary sanctions, including the payment of only 20 per cent of their monthly wage or total forfeiture.

The letter, titled “Executive Order on Termination of Monday Sit-at-Home in Anambra State,” stated that the prolonged Monday sit-at-home had been abolished with immediate effect.

It further directed school authorities and administrative heads to circulate the order widely and ensure full compliance, stressing that the decision represents an official executive directive of the state government.

The iNews Times recalls that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had declared Mondays as sit-at-home days beginning August 9, 2021, pending the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Although IPOB has since announced the cancellation of the directive, compliance has continued in many parts of the state due to fears of possible attacks.
