Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Confucius Institute secures top three positions as national champion prepares for global finals in China.

AWKA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The Chinese Bridge Competition witnessed a major triumph for students of the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) https://unizik.edu.ng, as they delivered an outstanding performance at the Nigeria National Final of the 19th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students, clinching the national championship and sweeping the top three positions.

The remarkable feat has further reinforced UNIZIK’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading centres for Chinese language education and cultural exchange, with university officials hailing the victory as another milestone in the institution’s long-standing dominance in the prestigious global language contest.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Chinese Bridge Competition is one of the most recognized international language contests organized to promote Chinese language learning and strengthen cultural ties between China and participating countries.

Over the years, the competition has become a platform for students across the world to demonstrate their proficiency in Mandarin, cultural understanding, and communication skills.

In Nigeria, the annual contest attracts participants from Confucius Institutes and Chinese language centres across different universities and educational institutions, making it one of the most competitive academic language events in the country.

Since joining the competition in 2018, the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has consistently emerged as a dominant force, producing national champions and international finalists.

Its sustained success has made the institute a symbol of excellence in foreign language education and international academic collaboration.

Key Developments

At this year’s Nigeria National Final, which was held virtually, students from the UNIZIK Confucius Institute delivered exceptional performances after four intense rounds of competition.

Three contestants from the institution stood out among participants from across Nigeria, eventually claiming all the top three spots and winning four major awards.

Ms. Umezurike Favour Chinaetugo (宋今煜), also known by her Chinese name Song Jinyu, was honoured with the Best Eloquence Award, a recognition reserved for participants who demonstrated outstanding verbal fluency and confidence.

She also secured the Second Prize alongside Ms. Okoye Chikadibia Faith (刘信), known in Chinese as Liu Xin.

The biggest highlight of the event was the emergence of 17-year-old Ms. Micheal Uchechi Justina (麦雅岚), known by her Chinese name Mai Yalan, who was crowned the National Champion.

By virtue of her victory, Micheal Uchechi Justina will now represent Nigeria at the global final of the Chinese Bridge Competition scheduled to hold in China later this year.

As she is still underage, the young champion will travel with her Chinese language teacher to the international contest.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Reacting to the achievement, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Yu Zhangbao, described the victory as another historic moment for the institution.

According to him, this marks the twelfth time a student from the institute has emerged as Nigeria’s national champion since it began participating in the competition in 2018.

“It is also our seventh national championship title in the Secondary School Students category since joining that competition in 2019,” he stated.

Deputy Director of the institute, Prof. Anas Egwuatu Elochukwu, said the victory reflects the high standard of teaching and training at the institute.

He noted that all six previous secondary school national champions produced by the institute successfully advanced to the Global Top 30.

“Among them, two won Global First Prizes, two received Global Third Prizes, and two were crowned African Champions. These achievements demonstrate the growing competitiveness of Chinese language education in Nigeria,” he said.

Prof. Elochukwu expressed optimism that Micheal Uchechi Justina would continue the winning tradition and achieve another breakthrough for Nigeria at the global stage.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, congratulated the students and the Confucius Institute for sustaining their winning streak over the years.

The Vice Chancellor, who is currently in China on official assignment, said the development speaks volumes about the strength of the partnership between Nigeria and China in educational and cultural advancement.

Implications

The latest victory underscores the growing influence of Chinese language education in Nigeria and highlights the strategic importance of academic partnerships between Nigerian institutions and international educational bodies.

As China continues to expand its economic and diplomatic footprint across Africa, proficiency in Mandarin is increasingly becoming a valuable skill for young Nigerians seeking opportunities in global trade, technology, and diplomacy.

For Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the achievement further strengthens its status as a leading hub for international language studies and cultural exchange.

Education experts say such consistent performances could inspire more students across Nigeria to embrace foreign language studies as part of their career development.

Beyond academics, the competition also reinforces cultural diplomacy between Nigeria and China, opening doors for stronger bilateral cooperation.

What Happens Next

Attention now shifts to the global finals in China, where Micheal Uchechi Justina will compete against national champions from across the world.

The Confucius Institute at UNIZIK is expected to intensify preparations to ensure Nigeria’s representative is fully equipped for the international stage.

Stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether the institution can extend its impressive record by securing another global prize.

A strong performance at the global finals would not only boost the institute’s international standing but also elevate Nigeria’s profile in global language competitions.

Conclusion

The latest success at the Chinese Bridge Competition has once again placed Nnamdi Azikiwe University at the forefront of Chinese language education in Nigeria. With its students dominating the national finals and securing the championship, the institution continues to build a legacy of excellence in language proficiency and cultural exchange. As Nigeria’s new champion prepares for the global stage in China, expectations remain high that UNIZIK could once again deliver international glory.
