Officer in Extortion video

…the extortion video had sparked widespread outrage

The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action against six officers involved in a viral extortion video along the Benin Bypass in Edo State, iNews Times reports.

The officers, including their supervisory officer, a Chief Superintendent of Police, were summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where the Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun described their actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable”.

The police officers were captured on camera demanding either ₦5,000 or five litres of petrol from motorists who failed to present Electronic Central Motor Registry certificate, (ECMR), despite the suspension of ECMR enforcement by IGP Egbetokun in July 2024.

The extortion video had sparked widespread outrage, drawing swift condemnation from both the public and police authorities.

Following this development, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to upholding professionalism, integrity, and accountability, assuring the public that such misconduct will not be tolerated under any guise.

The Force Public Relations Officers, Olumuyiwa Adejobi who confirmed this in a post on its official X.com handle said the officers have been queried, and orderly room trials have commenced for the Inspectors directly implicated in the video.

Adding that appropriate sanctions will be meted out in line with established disciplinary procedures.

The Force’s zero-tolerance policy on extortion and misconduct has been reaffirmed, and the public is encouraged to report any instances of unprofessional behavior. The police authorities are taking steps to maintain public trust and ensure ethical conduct among its ranks, he said.
