Bomb Explosion in Imo Leaves Soldier, NSCDC Personnel Injured in Orsu Operation

…the Bomb Explosion incident is expected to further shape security strategies in the region.

Orsu, Nigeria — The iNews Times | Bomb Explosion has left a soldier and a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) injured during a joint security operation in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The incident, which underscores the persistent security challenges in the region, reportedly occurred at about 8:35 a.m. on March 18, as troops intensified operations to dismantle criminal hideouts and restore order in the area.

According to a counter-insurgency and security expert focused on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, the explosion happened during a coordinated mission involving troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade operating within the Orsu general area.

Sources familiar with the operation disclosed that the joint team was advancing around a suspected hideout linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), when the incident occurred.

Preliminary findings indicate that the operatives inadvertently stepped on a concealed, pressure-activated Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which detonated instantly, causing injuries to both personnel.

The Bomb Explosion incident highlights the evolving tactics employed by armed groups in the region, particularly the use of improvised explosive devices to target security forces and impede ongoing military operations.

Eyewitness accounts and operational reports suggest that the explosion created a moment of panic within the patrol unit, although the situation was quickly brought under control by other members of the team.

The injured soldier and NSCDC officer were immediately administered first aid at the scene before being evacuated to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of their injuries, but sources indicate that both are currently receiving care and are in stable condition.

Security officials say operations in the area have continued without interruption, with intensified efforts aimed at locating and dismantling criminal enclaves believed to be responsible for attacks and acts of sabotage in the region.

“Operations are ongoing in the area to dismantle criminal hideouts and enhance safety,” the source confirmed, adding that the mission remains focused on restoring normalcy and ensuring the protection of lives and property.

Analysts note that the Bomb Explosion serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by security personnel engaged in counter-insurgency operations, particularly in volatile areas where non-state actors deploy asymmetric warfare tactics.

In recent months, parts of Imo State and the wider South-East region have witnessed increased security operations targeting armed groups accused of carrying out attacks on security formations, government facilities, and civilians.

The use of IEDs, though not widespread in the region compared to other conflict zones, is increasingly becoming a concern for security agencies, as it complicates ground operations and raises the stakes for personnel on active duty.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements, emphasizing that ongoing operations are designed to neutralize threats and restore lasting peace in affected communities.

Residents of Orsu and neighbouring areas have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing operations.

The Bomb Explosion incident is expected to further shape security strategies in the region, particularly in enhancing surveillance, intelligence gathering, and explosive detection capabilities among operatives.

As security forces continue their mission, stakeholders say a combination of tactical operations, community engagement, and intelligence-driven interventions will be crucial in addressing the evolving security landscape in the South-East.
