…the US Embassy Baghdad warned Americans against attempting to visit diplomatic facilities.

Baghdad, Iraq — The iNews Times reports that the US Embassy Baghdad has called on American citizens to immediately leave Iraq following heightened tensions and ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

The US Embassy Baghdad issued the urgent advisory on Thursday via a post on X, citing widespread attacks on US citizens and American-linked targets across Iraq by suspected Iran-aligned terrorist militias.

According to the mission, the security situation in Iraq has significantly deteriorated due to the intensifying confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

Embassy Warns of Missiles, Drones, Rockets

In its advisory, the US Embassy Baghdad warned Americans against attempting to visit diplomatic facilities due to ongoing aerial threats.

“Do not attempt to come to the embassy in Baghdad or the consulate general in Erbil in light of ongoing risk of missiles, drones and rockets in Iraqi airspace,” the statement read.

The embassy, however, noted that it remains open and ready to assist US citizens seeking evacuation from the Middle East country, even as security concerns mount.

The warning underscores growing fears of further retaliatory attacks targeting US interests within Iraq and across the region.

Background to the Escalation

The current crisis stems from events that began in late February, when the United States, in conjunction with Israel, reportedly launched attacks on Iran. The strikes allegedly led to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader and several other high-ranking figures.

The development dramatically escalated tensions in the Middle East, drawing swift condemnation and vows of retaliation from Tehran.

In response, Iran has reportedly launched multiple waves of drones and missiles targeting United States interests in the Middle East, as well as Israel. The retaliatory strikes have heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.

Although Iraq is not officially a direct party to the confrontation, its territory has often been a flashpoint for proxy confrontations between US forces and Iran-backed militias.

Iraq as a Strategic Flashpoint

Iraq hosts US diplomatic and military personnel and has long been a battleground for influence between Washington and Tehran. Iran-aligned militias operate within Iraqi territory, making US-linked facilities potential targets during periods of heightened tension.

Security analysts say the advisory from the US Embassy Baghdad reflects concerns that Iraq could again become a theatre for indirect hostilities between the two global rivals.

The mention of missiles, drones, and rockets in Iraqi airspace signals the seriousness of the threat assessment by US authorities.

Rising Anxiety Among Americans in Iraq

The embassy’s directive has sparked concern among American expatriates, contractors, and aid workers operating in Iraq.

While the diplomatic mission has offered evacuation assistance, the warning not to approach the embassy or the consulate in Erbil highlights the complexity of the situation.

Travel advisories of this nature are typically issued when there is credible intelligence of imminent threats to citizens or diplomatic facilities.

Observers note that such advisories can also have wider diplomatic implications, affecting economic activities, humanitarian operations, and bilateral relations.

Regional Implications

The ongoing exchange between the United States and Iran has already raised alarms among international observers who fear that continued retaliation could spiral into a broader regional war.

Countries across the Middle East are closely monitoring developments, particularly as drone and missile warfare has become increasingly central to the conflict dynamic.

The US Embassy Baghdad’s advisory signals that American authorities are taking precautionary steps to safeguard their citizens amid volatile security conditions.

As tensions remain high, attention is now focused on whether diplomatic efforts will be intensified to de-escalate the crisis or whether further military exchanges could occur.

For now, the US Embassy Baghdad has made its position clear: American citizens in Iraq should prioritise their safety and make immediate arrangements to leave the country while evacuation support remains available.
