…highlighted voter apathy as the most pressing challenge facing the Anambra LG Election 2026.

Awka, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that the Anambra LG Election 2026 will be conducted in a free, fair and credible manner, according to the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), which has firmly denied allegations that Governor Chukwuma Soludo plans to manipulate the August 29 local government polls.

The Commission, reacting to widespread public speculation surrounding the Anambra LG Election 2026, assured residents that all necessary logistics are being finalized to guarantee a transparent electoral process across the state’s 21 local government areas.

Speaking in Awka, Commissioner in charge of Information and Publicity, Chief Anthony Chinedu, said preparations are progressing steadily, including arrangements for both sensitive and non-sensitive materials needed for the Anambra LG Election 2026.

According to him, the Commission has already secured non-sensitive materials and is finalizing bookings for sensitive materials to ensure their timely deployment before the election date.

“These materials will take some time to be accessed, but we are assuring Ndi-Anambra that they will be ready on or before the end of this month or, at worst, by next month,” he stated.

Addressing allegations that Governor Soludo intends to interfere in the Anambra LG Election 2026, Chinedu dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

He emphasized that the governor has no constitutional role in determining electoral outcomes and will only vote in his ward in Isuofia community on election day.

“Mr Governor has no intention whatsoever to influence or manipulate the elections as alleged. He will not be in any ward except his own. How can someone in Isuofia influence councillorship elections in Ayamelum or any other local government? Such assumption is impossible,” he said.

The iNews Times gathered that concerns over political interference have intensified in recent weeks, particularly as only two political parties the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) are participating in the Anambra LG Election 2026.

The Commission confirmed that despite publishing the election timetable and schedule of activities in September last year, only APGA and YPP successfully fielded candidates before the deadline for party primaries expired.

Chinedu questioned the absence of other registered political parties from the process.

“If you believe you are a registered political party with followers, why can’t you venture into the electoral process?” he asked.

The limited party participation has sparked debate among political observers in Anambra State, with some expressing concern that reduced competition could affect voter enthusiasm during the Anambra LG Election 2026.

Beyond allegations of manipulation, ANSIEC highlighted voter apathy as the most pressing challenge facing the Anambra LG Election 2026.

According to the Commission, turnout in local government elections has steadily declined over the years, a trend it describes as dangerous for grassroots democracy.

“The only problem we have, which we always cry out about, is the growing level of voter apathy in Anambra State,” Chinedu said.

He explained that many residents choose not to vote out of frustration with governance, a decision he described as counterproductive.

“When you refuse to go and vote, you are indirectly giving approval for the wrong people to take over government. It is as simple as that.”

Political analysts note that local government elections play a critical role in grassroots development, including decisions affecting primary healthcare, rural infrastructure, market management, and community security initiatives.

As tension builds ahead of the Anambra LG Election 2026, ANSIEC urged residents to shun protests and instead exercise their civic responsibility at the ballot box.

The Commission advised eligible voters to come out en masse on August 29 and vote for candidates they believe can deliver effective governance at the local level.

“Do not protest inside your house. Come out and vote against anyone you believe is not properly positioned for the election,” Chinedu urged.

He reiterated that the Commission will declare whoever wins as the legitimate victor, regardless of party affiliation.

“If it is YPP, fine. If it is APGA, fine. Whoever wins will be declared the true winner by the Commission.”

The iNews Times reports that ANSIEC maintains it is not anticipating major challenges during the Anambra LG Election 2026, stressing that internal systems have been strengthened to safeguard transparency and credibility.

Election observers note that public confidence will depend heavily on how logistics, security coordination, and vote collation processes are handled on election day.

For many residents, the August 29 poll represents not just a routine electoral exercise but a test of institutional independence in Anambra State.

As preparations intensify, ANSIEC insists the integrity of the Anambra LG Election 2026 will not be compromised.
