In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The NUJ Anambra State Council traces its roots to the creation of Anambra State in 1991. Journalists who relocated to the new capital quickly established an ad hoc committee under the late Mr Obi Meze before formal elections produced successive leaderships. Over three and a half decades the council has maintained a record of orderly transitions without inconclusive elections or parallel executives, a point repeatedly stressed by veteran members.

High Chief Nwabueze, who holds the traditional titles of Ichie Akubudike, Agubuzo na Dunukofia and Ozoma Ndi Ichie, has built a reputation as a consistent private-sector contributor to public welfare. His foundation’s work complements state efforts in areas where official resources often fall short, particularly in rural communities and youth development.

Key Developments

The anniversary event combined celebration of the council’s longevity with recognition of both non-journalist contributors and media professionals. Ichie Akubudike emerged as the overall Man of the Year.

Twelve other personalities received category awards: Prof Charles Ofoegbu (Lifetime Achievements and Outstanding Public Service), Hon Obby Nwankwo (Outstanding Public Service), Mr Nwosu Sylvester Mmaduabuchi (Outstanding Philanthropist of the Decade), Chief Romanus Chika (Philanthropist of the Year), Chief Onwuzuruike Arinze Gabriel (Outstanding Humanitarian of the Year), Engr Ralph Ezeike (Outstanding Community Development Icon), Rev Fr Innocent Kenechukwu Affusim (Outstanding Medical Professional Service), Mrs Aisha Edward Maduagwu (Outstanding Health Personality of the Decade), Amb Benjamin Umerah Emeka (Humanitarian Service), Hon Prince Nweke Chigozie Henry (Leadership), Hon Prince Chinedu Ekwunife (Outstanding Politician) and Sir Nwoba Chika Nwoba (Beacon of Digital Journalism).

Fifteen journalists were also honoured for their contributions to the practice and institutional life of the union. Comrade Victor Agusiobo, a two-term former chairman and Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, received the Long Term Outstanding Professional Leadership Service Award. Dr Denis Ekemezie and Dr Ifeanyi Obiefuna were among those recognised for long-term professional service and media support. Other recipients included Monic Okechukwu, Ngozi Obi-Chukwuma, Chinyere-Fessy Okoye, Sylvia Tochukwu-Ngige, Chukwudi Chukwuenyem, Kasie Abone, Chigozie Chukwueleta, Uche Kalu, Uche Osunkwor, Sir Anthony Nweke, Uzoma Nzeagwu and Uchenna Nwekoyo.

Ewa Ukpa of the Ministry of Information won the 2026 Prof Chinyere Stella Okunna Award for Ethical Journalism for her investigative report “The Excluded Majority: How Women Are Shut Out of Igwe Elections in Anambra State.” Uche Ndeke of Radio Nigeria and Chukwuebuka Oguocha of Odogwublog placed second and third respectively.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Represented at the ceremony, Ichie Akubudike pledged to reciprocate the honour. He reaffirmed his commitment to sustainable development, community empowerment, cultural preservation and societal advancement through business, sports and humanitarian service.

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, opened the event with a call for responsible journalism. “Yes, you must report the truth. But is there a way it should be reported so that it does not cause mayhem? When you say ‘people were killed’ and when you say ‘people were massacred’, there is a difference. That is all government is pleading for: report responsibly,” Dr Mefor stated. He congratulated the council on 35 years of growth and assured journalists of government support whenever they encounter difficulties.

National President of the NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, used the occasion to renew the union’s demand for a dedicated special salary structure for media practitioners. He highlighted the meagre earnings and hazardous conditions faced by journalists nationwide and announced the rollout of the NUJ Health Insurance Scheme, urging members across state councils to enrol for quality healthcare access.

Former council chairman Comrade Victor Agusiobo provided a detailed historical overview of the union’s leadership succession since 1991, underscoring the absence of electoral crises. Current Chairman Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu charged non-journalist awardees to uphold the dignity of the honour and to support the training and retraining of journalists. He also reminded members of their constitutional role as the moral barometers of society.

Implications

The recognition of Ichie Akubudike and other private-sector figures underscores the growing expectation that successful business leaders will fill gaps in social infrastructure and youth opportunity in Anambra. At the same time, the emphasis on journalists’ welfare and ethical standards reflects ongoing pressures within the Nigerian media industry. Calls for a special salary structure and the introduction of a health insurance scheme signal attempts by the national union to professionalise and stabilise the sector. For Anambra specifically, the peaceful continuity of the NUJ council offers a model of institutional stability that other professional bodies may seek to emulate.

What Happens Next

The Ichie Akubudike Foundation is expected to sustain and possibly expand its existing programmes, particularly in sports and women empowerment. The NUJ Anambra Council will continue its advocacy for improved conditions while monitoring the uptake of the new health insurance scheme. State government representatives have indicated openness to further engagement with journalists on capacity building and responsible coverage of public affairs. The next cycle of awards and the council’s ongoing professional development activities will test how effectively the goodwill generated by the 35th anniversary translates into concrete support for members.

Conclusion

The crowning of Ichie Akubudike as 2026 NUJ Anambra Man of the Year, together with the honouring of other contributors and practising journalists, marks more than a ceremonial milestone. It highlights the intersection of private philanthropy, professional journalism and institutional continuity in Anambra State. As The iNews Times continues to track these developments, the event stands as a reminder that sustained community investment and ethical media practice remain central to the state’s social progress.
