In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2026 primary elections, political parties across Nigeria are fine-tuning internal processes to ensure credible candidate selection.

For the All Progressives Grand Alliance, a party with deep political roots in Anambra State, the screening exercise represents a critical step in consolidating its electoral strength in both national and state legislative contests.

The announcement, issued on Sunday in Awka by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, signals the formal commencement of internal vetting procedures for aspirants within the state.

Key Developments

According to the statement, the screening for Senate and House of Representatives aspirants will hold on Monday, May 11, 2026, at 10am prompt at the APGA National Headquarters in Abuja.

The screening for Anambra State House of Assembly aspirants will follow on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 10am at the party’s regional office in Awka.

The party made it clear that access to the venues will be strictly controlled. Only members of the screening committee and duly cleared aspirants will be admitted, while supporters, aides and associates have been directed to stay away to ensure orderliness and procedural integrity.

Aspirants are also required to appear in person with the original certificate of their highest academic qualification for verification. The party emphasised that photocopies will not be accepted in place of originals.

Importantly, the APGA Screening Schedule 2026 exercise has been declared free of charge. Opara stressed that no aspirant is required to make any payment to any individual or committee under any guise.

“Any demand for payment should be reported immediately to the National Secretariat,” the statement warned.

The party further noted that screening arrangements for aspirants from states outside Anambra will be communicated in due course through official channels.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Party insiders who spoke to The iNews Times described the early release of the APGA Screening Schedule 2026 as a move aimed at preventing last-minute confusion and internal disputes.

A senior party official, who requested anonymity, said the strict guidelines were designed to reinforce transparency.

“The leadership wants a process that is credible and beyond reproach. That is why documentation requirements are clear and the screening is free. We do not want allegations of financial inducement or irregularities,” the source said.

Political observers in Awka also noted that the emphasis on original academic certificates reflects growing public scrutiny of candidates’ qualifications in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Implications

The screening exercise is more than a routine administrative step. It will determine who flies the party’s flag in what is expected to be a competitive electoral cycle.

For APGA, which holds significant political influence in Anambra State, the credibility of the screening process could shape voter perception and internal party unity ahead of the general elections.

By insisting that the APGA Screening Schedule 2026 process remains free and transparent, the party appears keen to avoid controversies that have plagued primary elections in other political parties across the country.

The directive restricting access to screening venues may also reduce the risk of clashes, undue pressure, or attempts at external influence during the vetting process.

What Happens Next

Following the screening exercise, cleared aspirants are expected to proceed to the party’s primary elections, where delegates will determine the final candidates for Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly seats.

Attention will then shift to campaign strategies, coalition building and grassroots mobilisation, particularly within Anambra State, where APGA remains a dominant force.

The timeline for aspirants from other states will be announced subsequently, potentially expanding the party’s national footprint as it prepares for broader legislative contests.

Conclusion

With the release of the APGA Screening Schedule 2026, the party has set the stage for what could be a defining primary season in Anambra politics. By outlining strict guidelines, enforcing documentation standards and declaring the process free of charge, APGA is positioning itself as committed to transparency and internal discipline.

As political momentum gathers, all eyes will be on how the screening unfolds and whether it strengthens the party’s standing ahead of the crucial 2026 elections.
