The blaze, which reportedly began around 1 a.m., affected several shops within the market, with eyewitnesses claiming that goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke and flame engulfing sections of the market, as traders and residents scrambled to salvage their belongings.
An eyewitness identified as Lugar Feliz, speaking during a TikTok livestream, confirmed that firefighters had arrived at the scene, noting that the blaze broke out around the Popo area of the market.
Several users on X (formerly Twitter) also raised alarm over the incident. One user described the situation as a “terrible fire outbreak,” while others shared real-time updates as the flame spread.
Another resident alleged that shops close to his own were completely razed, lamenting the scale of destruction and the losses incurred.
