Sector Commander Calls for Heightened Vigilance as Heavy Rains Increase Crash Risks Across the State.

AWKA, Nigeria – The iNews Times | The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) https://frsc.gov.ng Anambra State Sector Command has intensified calls for Anambra rainy season road safety measures as forecasts predict heavier downpours across Nigeria, urging motorists to adopt stricter precautions to prevent avoidable accidents.

This timely intervention comes as the rainy season gains momentum, bringing with it slippery roads, reduced visibility, and heightened hazards that have historically contributed to spikes in road traffic incidents in the state.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Anambra State, a major commercial and industrial hub in Southeast Nigeria, experiences one of the most challenging rainy seasons in the region, typically spanning from April to October. Past years have recorded notable increases in road crashes during peak rainfall periods due to factors such as hydroplaning, poor vehicle maintenance, and speeding. The FRSC has consistently highlighted these seasonal risks, building on national efforts to reduce Nigeria’s high road fatality rates. This latest advisory reinforces ongoing public education campaigns aimed at protecting lives and preserving the state’s economic lifeline through safer roads.

Key Developments

Corps Commander Bridget Asekhanuo, the Anambra State Sector Commander, issued the directive through Sector Public Education Officer SRC Margaret Onabe. She emphasized the critical role of vehicle tyres as the sole point of contact with the road, stressing the need for adequate tread depth and proper traction on wet surfaces.

Drivers have been advised to ensure their vehicles are fully roadworthy before any journey, with particular attention to cleaning windows and windshields inside and out. Essential components including headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, windscreen wipers, and wiper blades must be inspected and functioning optimally.

Asekhanuo further directed that vehicle lights be switched on during rainfall day or night to improve visibility. Motorists must reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and apply “common sense speed limits” suited to weather and road conditions.

To enforce compliance, all Unit Commanders have been tasked with intensifying traffic calming operations, sustaining public enlightenment campaigns, and paying special attention to windscreen wipers during patrols throughout the season.

Reactions from Stakeholders

The FRSC’s proactive stance has been welcomed by road users and safety advocates. “Drivers should thoroughly clean their vehicle windows and windshields… and inspect essential safety components,” the statement reiterated.

Asekhanuo called on all road users to cooperate fully with the Corps. “Drive to Stay Alive,” she emphasized, underscoring the shared responsibility in reducing road traffic crashes.

Implications

Enhanced Anambra rainy season road safety practices carry significant economic and social weight. Road crashes not only claim lives but also disrupt commerce, increase healthcare burdens, and damage vehicles and infrastructure in a state pivotal to regional trade. By minimizing incidents, these measures support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s broader vision for safer, more efficient transportation networks that boost investor confidence and protect families.

What Happens Next

FRSC operations are expected to remain heightened through the peak rainy months, with increased enforcement and sensitization activities. Motorists are encouraged to stay updated via official channels and prioritize vehicle maintenance. Authorities anticipate greater compliance as public awareness grows, potentially leading to a measurable decline in weather-related crashes.

Conclusion

As Anambra navigates another rainy season, the FRSC’s comprehensive advisory serves as a vital reminder that road safety is a collective duty. By heeding these practical guidelines, motorists can significantly reduce risks and contribute to a safer traveling environment for all. The iNews Times will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on road safety initiatives across Anambra State.
