…Justice Mohammed Uwais demise was confirmed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State.

The iNews Times reports that Nigeria’s legal community is mourning the loss of a stalwart jurist, Justice Mohammed Uwais, who passed away in the early hours of Friday at the age of 89.

The news of his demise was confirmed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.

The iNews Times reports that Justice Uwais had a long and illustrious career in the Nigerian judiciary, serving as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) from 1995 to 2006.

During his tenure, he brought stability and reform to the nation’s judiciary, earning the respect of his peers and the public.

After his retirement, Uwais was appointed by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to chair the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee. The committee, which included prominent figures such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and human rights lawyer Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, was tasked with reviewing and recommending reforms to Nigeria’s electoral processes.

Justice Mohammed Uwais’ contributions to Nigeria’s legal system are immeasurable. He played a significant role in shaping the country’s judicial landscape and was known for his commitment to justice and fairness.

His leadership and expertise have left a lasting impact on the nation’s judiciary.
