LAP Awards ₦1 Million Scholarships to 36 Outstanding Students

…the LAP scholarship was created to ensure that every intelligent child is given “a fair chance,” irrespective of family background.

NAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The League of Anambra Professionals (LAP) officially launched the inaugural edition of its Future Forward Scholarship Programme, awarding ₦1 million annually to each of the 36 beneficiaries drawn from the state’s three senatorial districts.

Held at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre in Awka, the event tagged “The Future Is Now” attracted professionals, journalists, parents, LAP members, stakeholders, and jubilant students. LAP described the initiative as a long-term human-capital investment aimed at supporting talented students whose educational aspirations risk being cut short due to financial hardship.

Speaking at the ceremony, LAP President and Managing Director of Odenigbo FM, Sir Nnamdi Obi, said the LAP scholarship was created to ensure that every intelligent child is given “a fair chance,” irrespective of family background. While acknowledging the Anambra State Government’s efforts in the education sector, he emphasized the need for the private sector to strengthen and complement those efforts.

Represented by LAP’s Deputy President and Chairperson of its Education Committee, Dr. Elizabeth Ifeyinwa Jibunoh, Sir Obi revealed that the inspiration for the programme came after a visit to MTN Nigeria Chairman, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe. He noted that a single question raised during that engagement underscored the urgent need for a structured support system for indigent students, a vision that has now materialized as the Future Forward Scholarship Programme.

He noted that although LAP has implemented several impactful programmes over the years, this scholarship marks its most ambitious and enduring commitment to educational empowerment.

The president disclosed that over 300 applications were submitted across the state, from which 12 exceptional candidates were chosen from each senatorial district. He emphasised that the initiative is entirely funded by LAP without government or private sponsorship, and will expand as the organisation’s budget allows.

Sir Obi further highlighted that the ₦1 million annual award covers tuition, accommodation, and monthly stipends. Through a partnership with Fidelity Bank, beneficiaries will also operate personal accounts to help strengthen financial discipline and literacy. He added, “Beyond financial support, the students will undergo a comprehensive mentorship and mindset-shaping programme aimed at preparing them for leadership, encouraging innovation, and expanding their global perspective.”

In his goodwill message, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, applauded LAP for investing in the next generation. Represented by his Personal Assistant, Ukpa Ewa, he explained that the union offered its hall free of charge despite its usual ₦1.5m–₦3m rental fee because the initiative aligns with NUJ’s vision of supporting credible, transformative projects. He noted that events held at the NUJ Secretariat are typically treated as NUJ-endorsed, which was why journalists were not formally deployed, especially since a union member, Kasie Abone, was already part of the organising committee.

Also speaking, Dr. Ngozi Achike, who travelled from Maryland, USA, commended the transparency of the selection process and lamented that despite the significant wealth in Anambra State, many affluent individuals overlook the struggles of gifted but financially challenged students. She encouraged the beneficiaries to “build confidence, stay curious, develop character, and make the most of this opportunity.”

Representing the awardees, Ifeanyi Victor and Chioma Ekwueme expressed heartfelt gratitude to LAP, describing the scholarship as a transformative lifeline that has renewed their resolve to achieve academic excellence. A parent, Mrs. Egbosiuba Chioma, also thanked the League and prayed for continuous blessings on its members.

Delivering the vote of thanks, LAP Assistant Publicity Secretary and member of the Education Committee, Comrade Kasie Abone, cautioned the beneficiaries against poor academic performance, misconduct, or involvement in cult activities. She stressed that LAP would closely monitor their progress to ensure the investment produces future leaders and global ambassadors.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of dummy cheques to the 36 scholarship recipients, greeted by loud applause and celebration.
