NIGER STATE, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| A windstorm has caused significant damage at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paiko, located in Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, disrupting ongoing activities for new corps members.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, reportedly tore off roofs and destroyed several buildings within the camp. Affected structures include male corps members’ hostels, the multipurpose hall, the kitchen, staff quarters, and parts of the state coordinator’s residence.
Despite the extent of the destruction, no casualties or injuries were recorded, as corps members who were inside the buildings at the time of the storm escaped unharmed.
In response, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago described the incident as unfortunate and immediately directed the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, to coordinate with the Ministries of Works, Youth, and Social Development to commence urgent repairs.
The governor noted that the damage has created discomfort for both corps members and camp officials, stressing the need for swift intervention to restore normalcy and allow the orientation programme to continue without further disruption.
He also commended the rapid response efforts, particularly the collaboration with the management of Abubakar Dada Secondary School, Paiko, which provided temporary classroom spaces to accommodate displaced corps members.
Reaffirming his commitment to the safety and welfare of NYSC members, the governor assured that necessary measures would be taken to prevent further inconvenience and ensure a conducive environment for their service year.
