Conflicting accounts emerge as PGF denies Abuja meeting and leadership change.

Abuja, Nigeria – The iNews Times reports that the leadership of the Progressive Governors Forum Chairman has come under intense scrutiny following reports that about 20 governors named Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, as the new head of the body.

The development reportedly followed the alleged removal of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, as chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, a key platform for governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) https://apc.com.ng.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Progressive Governors Forum serves as a strategic caucus of APC governors, shaping policy direction and political coordination within the ruling party.

Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State, has been serving as chairman of the forum, a role that carries significant influence in party consultations and federal-state engagements.

Leadership dynamics within the forum are often closely watched, especially ahead of major political alignments and internal party negotiations.

Key Developments

According to reports monitored by The iNews Times, an extraordinary meeting involving about 20 APC governors was allegedly held in Abuja on Thursday night.

The meeting was said to have taken place at the Ogun Government Lodge, where discussions reportedly culminated in naming Peter Mbah as the new Progressive Governors Forum Chairman.

Arise Television reported that governors including Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and 17 others attended the gathering.

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the meeting indeed held and that leadership changes were discussed.

However, the Director General of the forum, Folorunso Aluko, swiftly denied the development in a statement, describing the reports as “false and misleading.”

Aluko insisted that no such meeting took place and maintained that Hope Uzodinma remains the duly recognised chairman of the forum.

Reactions from Stakeholders

The official denial by the PGF secretariat has introduced uncertainty into the unfolding narrative.

“No such meeting was held, and the report is false and misleading,” Aluko stated, reaffirming Uzodinma’s leadership of the forum.

Meanwhile, a source privy to the alleged meeting countered the denial, insisting that governors convened and deliberated on leadership matters.

The conflicting positions have fueled speculation within political circles about possible undercurrents within the forum.

Implications

If confirmed, the reported emergence of Peter Mbah as Progressive Governors Forum Chairman could signal a significant shift in internal power dynamics within the APC.

The forum plays a critical role in consensus-building among governors, influencing legislative priorities and party strategies at the national level.

Any leadership reshuffle may also reflect broader alignments ahead of future electoral cycles, particularly as governors seek greater influence within the ruling party structure.

On the other hand, the firm denial by the PGF secretariat suggests that internal cohesion remains a priority, even as reports of divisions circulate.

What Happens Next

Political observers expect further clarification from key governors in the coming days to dispel uncertainty surrounding the Progressive Governors Forum Chairman position.

Should the reports persist, the forum may be compelled to issue a more detailed statement or convene a formal meeting to address the controversy.

Until then, the leadership status of the forum remains a subject of debate within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Conclusion

The controversy surrounding the Progressive Governors Forum Chairman highlights the delicate balance of power within the APC’s governors’ caucus.

As conflicting accounts continue to emerge, the situation underscores the high stakes attached to leadership roles within influential political platforms, with potential ripple effects across the party’s national strategy.
