The iNews Times reports that the Bauchi State Police Command has issued a stern warning to residents, particularly young individuals, against climbing telecommunications masts to draw attention.
According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, this trend has led to several incidents, prompting the command to take action.
In recent weeks, three significant cases have been reported where individuals attempted to commit suicide by scaling communication masts.
Wakil said, on June 16, 2025, 22-year-old Adamu Salisu climbed a network mast near Kofar Dumi Primary School, refusing to descend until Alhaji Bala Wunti announced his candidacy for governor.
Similarly, on June 18, 2025, 35-year-old Usman Nanu scaled a network mast at the same site, expressing unwarranted support for the incumbent Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir.
The most recent incident occurred on June 29, 2025, when 37-year-old Alkassim Saidu Yakubu climbed an MTN mast, demanding that the Bauchi State Commissioner of Finance publicly declare his candidacy for the gubernatorial race in 2027.
In each instance, police detectives were promptly deployed to rescue the individuals, who were subsequently apprehended for attempting to commit suicide.
Wakil noted that the individuals involved have acknowledged their actions and expressed remorse for their behavior.
Adding that they will face profiling and legal charges.
The state’s Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has expressed concern over this emerging trend among youths in Bauchi State, emphasizing the need for the public to abstain from such activities to ensure their safety.
Individuals who participate in these actions will face the full consequences of the law, he said.
The CP urged parents, guardians, and influential leaders to advise their wards against disruptive behavior and inciting remarks that may undermine peace in the state.
Anyone found liable or indirectly contributing to the destabilization of peace will be apprehended, investigated, and prosecuted.
The police command is determined to maintain law and order in the state, and residents are advised to seek alternative and lawful means of expressing themselves.
