…Tambuwal emphasised that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism must be viewed strictly as a national security issue.

Abuja, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that Senator Aminu Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has expressed reservations over the effectiveness of United States-led military interventions, following recent US airstrikes on terrorist enclaves in Sokoto State.

Tambuwal made the remarks on Friday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by The iNews Times, while reacting to reports of the US military’s involvement in counterterrorism operations in the state.

According to the former governor, historical precedents raise concerns about the long-term impact and effectiveness of similar collaborative military efforts carried out by the United States in different parts of the world.

“I will take that with some mixed reactions,” Tambuwal said. “If we go by the history of such operations as carried out by the US in some parts of the world, I am very, very concerned. We must be very circumspect.”

He noted that, judging from past experiences, such interventions have failed to deliver sustainable outcomes in several regions where they were implemented.

“And if history is anything to go by, it has not been able to effectively achieve much in some of the areas where such collaborative efforts were carried out,” he added.

However, Tambuwal emphasised that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism must be viewed strictly as a national security issue, stressing that it should not be framed along religious or ethnic lines.

“This is not a religious war. This is not an ethnic war. This is about our country and securing our country,” the senator said.

He acknowledged that support in combating terrorism could come from unexpected quarters, but cautioned that Nigeria must remain vigilant to ensure that no hidden agenda undermines the country’s sovereignty or the overall objective of restoring peace.

“What we need to do is to make sure that no hidden agenda is pursued in the pursuit of this fight against terrorism,” Tambuwal stated.
