…access to weapons can sometimes lead to abuse of power as seen in the Vigilante Shoots Girlfriend incident.

UMUAHIA, NIGERIA — The iNews Times reports that the Vigilante Shoots Girlfriend incident in Amakama, Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, has triggered a statewide manhunt after a local vigilante member allegedly killed his girlfriend, injured her sister, and shot another man in a violent attack that has thrown the community into shock.

The suspect, identified as Chinedu Anamelechi, is said to have opened fire on his girlfriend, Ezinne Ariwodo, before stabbing her sister and shooting another young man in the same incident. The attacker, reportedly a member of a local vigilante group, fled the scene immediately after the assault.

The tragic case has now escalated into a major security investigation, with police intensifying efforts to track down the fleeing suspect.

The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident in an official statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka.

According to the statement, police received distress information from the Umuanga Amakama Community and swiftly deployed operatives to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of Ezinne Ariwodo, who had sustained gunshot injuries and was found lying in a pool of blood.

“The command received information about an incident involving one Chinedu Anamelechi, who allegedly shot dead Ezinne Ariwodo, stabbed her sister, and also shot another young man,” the statement read.

The Vigilante Shoots Girlfriend incident has since become the focus of an active criminal investigation as security operatives pursue leads to apprehend the suspect.

Police confirmed that the two other victims the deceased woman’s sister and another male victim were quickly rescued from the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.

Both are currently receiving medical treatment, although their exact conditions have not been fully disclosed.

Ezinne Ariwodo was confirmed dead by medical personnel shortly after arrival at the hospital. Her body has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Authorities also recovered several exhibits from the scene, which have been taken for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation into the Vigilante Shooting case.

Residents of Amakama community were reportedly thrown into panic following the violent outbreak, which occurred within a residential area of Ubakala in Umuahia South.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the sound of gunshots caused widespread alarm, forcing residents to flee for safety as the attacker carried out the assault.

However, police authorities have assured that normalcy has since been restored in the area, with security patrols increased to prevent further disturbances.

ASP Maureen Chinaka urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“Investigation is ongoing as efforts are being made to apprehend the suspect,” she said.

The fact that the suspect is reportedly a member of a local vigilante group has raised renewed concerns about oversight and regulation of community-based security structures.

Vigilante groups in many parts of Nigeria operate alongside formal security agencies to provide grassroots intelligence and rapid response to local threats.

However, security experts warn that weak supervision and access to weapons can sometimes lead to abuse of power and violent escalation, as seen in the Vigilante Shoots Girlfriend incident.

The Abia case is now expected to intensify discussions around recruitment, training, and monitoring of non-state security actors.

The Abia State Police Command has launched a full-scale manhunt for Chinedu Anamelechi, deploying intelligence units and operational teams across possible escape routes.

Forensic evidence collected at the scene is currently being analyzed to assist in tracking the suspect.

Authorities have also called on members of the public to provide credible information that could lead to his arrest, assuring that all tips will be treated confidentially.

While investigations are ongoing, the case has also raised concerns about possible domestic violence, as the victim was identified as the suspect’s girlfriend.

Civil society organisations have repeatedly warned about rising cases of intimate partner violence across Nigeria, calling for stronger preventive mechanisms and community awareness campaigns.

The Abia State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is served in the Vigilante Shoots Girlfriend case.

Officials say anyone found responsible for the attack will face the full weight of the law once apprehended.

At The iNews Times, we will continue to follow this developing story, providing verified updates as police investigations progress and the suspect remains at large.

Residents of Umuahia South continue to await justice as the community grapples with the aftermath of a violent incident that has left one person dead and two others injured.
