…the cause of the Wukari Catholic Church fire remains unknown.

Wukari, Nigeria — The iNews Times | A late-night Wukari Catholic Church fire has sparked concern among members of the Catholic community and residents of Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State after flames engulfed parts of St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cathedral.

The Wukari Catholic Church fire, which occurred late at night, reportedly spread through sections of the cathedral in what eyewitnesses described as a sudden and distressing incident.

The development comes only a few months after a separate inferno destroyed parts of the Wukari Local Government Council secretariat, raising fresh fears among residents about recurring fire outbreaks in the area.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the Wukari Catholic Church fire remains unknown. Authorities have yet to confirm the extent of the damage to the cathedral or whether any casualties were recorded.

Diocese Already Facing Difficult Period

The incident comes at a particularly challenging time for the Wukari Catholic Diocese, which is still grappling with the aftermath of recent crises that reportedly led to the destruction of lives, parish churches, a rectory and other valuable properties within the diocese.

Preliminary information indicates that the Wukari Catholic Church fire broke out about an hour before reports of the incident began circulating among residents and members of the Catholic faithful.

The development left many in shock as the day ended with the unfortunate news of the fire outbreak.

Priest Rescues Blessed Sacrament

Despite the confusion that followed the outbreak, Fr. James Oliver, a priest in residence at the cathedral, reportedly acted swiftly during the incident.

He was said to have successfully rescued the Blessed Sacrrament unharmed before the flames spread further within the church premises during the Wukari Catholic Church fire.

Members of the Catholic community and residents of Wukari have since expressed deep concern over the development.

Many faithful reportedly turned to prayers, asking for God’s mercy and protection while hoping that no lives were lost.

Residents Raise Fire Service Concerns

Local authorities and emergency responders are expected to assess the damage and begin investigations to determine the cause of the Wukari Catholic Church fire.

Meanwhile, some members of the church who spoke with journalists via telephone expressed concern that the situation might have been better managed if functional fire service vehicles were available within the council area.

According to them, the absence of operational fire service trucks across local government councils in Taraba State has made it difficult to effectively control fire outbreaks.

Residents also noted that Wukari is the hometown of Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, urging the state government to strengthen fire emergency services across the state.

They argued that the inability to adequately equip fire services across local government areas has contributed to the difficulty in containing several infernos across Taraba State.
