Mbah Unveils Five Ultramodern Terminals in Enugu

…project has already started generating massive economic benefits, Mbah said.

ENUGU, NIGERIA – The iNews Times |Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, made history in the state’s transportation sector with the inauguration of five ultramodern transport terminals and the rollout of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses. The landmark development is part of his administration’s integrated blueprint for a modern, multimodal, and sustainable transport ecosystem aimed at transforming mobility, boosting the economy, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

The launch also featured the unveiling of the Enugu State Modern Transport System, a digital transport platform, and the completion of over 80 modern bus shelters strategically located across the state to improve commuter convenience and accessibility.

The newly commissioned terminals, visited and personally inaugurated by the governor, are:

Holy Ghost Terminal 1 (Enugu Central Station 1) – for inter-state transport

Holy Ghost Terminal 2 (Enugu Central Station 2) – for inter-city transport

Nsukka Terminal (Nsukka Central Station)

Abakpa Nike Terminal (Abakpa Central Station)

Gariki Terminal (Gariki Central Station)

Governor Mbah noted that the projects form Phase 1 of his administration’s integrated Five-Terminal Transport Infrastructure Projects, which align with his bold vision of growing Enugu State’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

Each terminal boasts world-class facilities including food courts, banking halls, motels, retail shops, CNG refilling stations, and cinemas. The two Holy Ghost Terminals are uniquely connected by a 400-metre-long sky bridge, now officially the longest in Nigeria. The newly launched CNG buses are equipped with free Wi-Fi and advanced security systems, enhancing comfort and safety for commuters.

Speaking to a mammoth crowd at Holy Ghost Terminal 2, Governor Mbah recalled that the Holy Ghost area had long been synonymous with “chaotic traffic and general disorderliness” before his administration’s intervention in late 2023.

“Aside from the fact it constituted a major municipal blight, we knew we could not attain our audacious economic goals if we lacked an efficient public transport system that offered both comfort and dignity,” he said.

“Our goal to make Enugu the most livable city in Nigeria would have been futile without addressing traffic gridlocks and the absence of an integrated transport system.”

Mbah stressed that the commissioning was “beyond a ribbon-cutting exercise,” describing it as the beginning of a new commuting experience that links his administration’s vision to real-life transformation for Enugu’s over seven million residents.

The governor highlighted that the CNG Rapid Bus Service and the new terminals serve as “central pillars” of his multimodal transport agenda, designed to integrate road, rail, air, and waterways into a seamless, efficient ecosystem.

“They represent our capacity to deliver projects that empower Ndi Enugu and set our state on a robust trajectory of growth,” he said.

According to Mbah, the project has already started generating massive economic benefits:

Over 20,000 jobs across Bus Rapid Transit operations

2,000 hybrid city taxis

New opportunities in airport operations, ride-hailing services, and support industries

He also assured that the Enugu Transport Management System will eliminate corruption and leakages through an e-ticketing system, which ensures transparency, accountability, and convenience for commuters.

“A single valid ticket grants access to all buses, and our comprehensive insurance covers both the assets and the people who use them,” Mbah explained.

Governor Mbah publicly thanked President Bola Tinubu for his consistent support for Enugu State and the South East, citing the concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport as a transformative move that will cement Enugu’s role as both an aviation and economic hub.

“No administration has given as much support to the sub-nationals as this President has done,” Mbah affirmed.

Representatives from the Presidential Initiative on CNG, the construction contractors, and community leaders hailed the project as unprecedented.

Programme Director/CEO of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi (represented by Engr. Tari Mayor-Bright), praised the initiative as a bold step towards a cleaner, safer, and more affordable transportation system.

Managing Director of Planet Project Construction Company, Biodun Otunola, declared that no state in Nigeria had ever built five terminals simultaneously, crediting the achievement to Governor Mbah’s political will and research-backed planning.

At the various terminals, key dignitaries, including Commissioner for Transportation Dr. Obi Ozor, Enugu North LGA Chairman Dr. Ibenaku Onoh, Nsukka LGA Chairman Engr. Jude Asogwa, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers Chairman Igwe Samuel Asadu, Ogige Market Traders Association Chairman Hon. Onyema Idoko, Nsukka General Assembly President Clinton Ogbonna, Enugu East LGA Chairman Beloved Dan-Anike, Nike Traditional Ruler Igwe Julius Nnaji, Enugu South LGA Chairman Hon. Caleb Ani, and Enugu South Traditional Rulers Council Chairman Igwe Mike Nna Ukwu, expressed delight over the development. They unanimously described the new facilities and buses as powerful economic catalysts capable of transforming the state’s commercial landscape.
