Ike Ibeabuchi’s career was derailed by a series of legal battles that saw him disappear from the boxing scene since 1999.

LAGOS, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Nigerian-born heavyweight boxer, Ike Ibeabuchi, is set to return to professional boxing after a 26-year hiatus, in what promises to be a blockbuster bout against Idris Afinni on Saturday, August 23, at the Molade Okoya Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

The announcement was made during a press conference organized to herald the much-anticipated comeback of the 52-year-old pugilist, famously known as “The President” by his fans. Once tipped as a future world champion, Ike Ibeabuchi’s career was derailed by a series of legal battles and personal struggles that saw him disappear from the boxing scene since his last professional fight in 1999.

Now, more than two decades later, the former undefeated fighter whose last victory came against American contender Chris Byrd is ready to reclaim his place in the ring.

“I’m great to be back,” Ike Ibeabuchi declared with confidence. “This isn’t the first time I’ve had to come back strong. I started boxing right here before I left for the U.S. in 1993. I defeated many great fighters and remained undefeated. I’m back to show my country what I’m made of. I was born for this. The long layoff means nothing. I’m fit, trained, and ready.”

The event has received full backing from the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), whose president, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, praised Ibeabuchi’s courage and urged boxing fans to attend what he called a “historic night for Nigerian boxing.” Also speaking at the press conference was Lagos State lawmaker and actor Desmond Elliot, who called the fight a “symbol of hope and resilience.”

Ibeabuchi’s opponent, Idris Afinni, a seasoned 40-year-old professional with 17 wins, seven losses, and two draws, made it clear he would not be a passive participant in the narrative.

“I’ll never let this opportunity slip,” Afinni warned. “ Ibeabuchi hasn’t stepped in the ring in 26 years, and that’s my motivation. Come Saturday, I’m going to send him back to retirement. I’m prepared, and I’ll give everything I’ve got.”

Miyen Akiri, promoter and CEO of Prizefighting.tv, emphasized the cultural and emotional weight of Ibeabuchi’s return.

“This fight isn’t just about the belt or the record,” Akiri explained. “It’s about redemption. It’s about Ike Ibeabuchi  stepping back into the spotlight in front of his own people. Lagos deserves this moment, and boxing fans will not be disappointed.”

He also commended Afinni for taking the fight, describing him as a “hungry and dangerous contender” who understands the career-defining potential of this matchup.

Once hailed as one of the most dangerous prospects in the heavyweight division, Ike Ibeabuchi’s promising rise was interrupted by a series of legal and mental health challenges that led to extended prison time in the United States. His return, therefore, is more than a sporting comeback, it’s a statement of personal resurgence.

With tickets already selling and anticipation growing across the boxing community, all eyes will be on Lagos this Saturday as two warriors step into the ring not just for glory, but for legacy.
