NiMet warns of heavy rainfall

…NiMet has cautioned residents to avoiding driving during heavy rainfall, securing loose items, and being alert to strong winds.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting widespread rainfall and potential flash floods across several parts of the country from Monday, October 7 to Wednesday, October 9, 2025.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across key northern states on Monday morning, including Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina. Later in the day, the rains are expected to spread to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba.

“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” the agency warned.

Central states such as Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa are forecast to witness morning cloudiness followed by light to moderate rainfall. Plateau State, in particular, is at high risk of flooding, according to NiMet.

In the South, light to moderate rainfall is expected across a wide range of states including Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Tuesday’s forecast shows a slight break in intensity in the North, with sunny skies and patchy clouds anticipated in several northern states. However, thunderstorms and rainfall are expected to persist in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and nearby areas. The Central and Southern regions will continue to experience moderate rains.

By Wednesday, thunderstorms will return to the northern states in the morning, with cloudy skies and moderate rainfall expected across the central zone. Southern states such as Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River are predicted to see morning showers followed by moderate to heavy rains later in the day.

NiMet has cautioned residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to take necessary precautions. These include avoiding driving during heavy rainfall, securing loose items, and being alert to strong winds and low nighttime temperatures.

“Residents are advised to activate emergency flood responses where applicable, and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms,” the agency advised, adding that people should also avoid taking shelter under tall trees.

As climate conditions continue to fluctuate, NiMet urges the public to remain vigilant and follow official weather advisories to ensure safety and reduce the impact of adverse weather events.
