…the Eze Madumere defection comes after what he described as extensive consultations.

Owerri, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that the Eze Madumere defection has sent ripples through Imo State’s political landscape, as the former Deputy Governor officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Madumere’s decision was formally conveyed in a declaration letter presented to the PDP in Imo State, marking what he described as a defining turning point in his political journey.

In the letter, the former deputy governor stated that his exit from the APC and entry into the PDP was driven by a renewed commitment to reposition his political engagement toward better service delivery, democratic ideals, and inclusive governance.

“I believe that when the platform one stands on is no longer serving the purpose of the people, it then becomes apt to build a new one,” Madumere stated.

He continued: “I have decided to officially inform you of my resignation from APC and my entry into the PDP. This is to enable me contribute my quota towards the development of the nation from a different perspective.”

A Defining Political Moment

The Eze Madumere defection comes after what he described as extensive consultations with his family, political mentors, and loyal supporters. According to him, the decision was neither rushed nor impulsive but carefully considered in light of prevailing circumstances within the APC.

Madumere noted that he had reached a point where remaining in the APC would amount to betraying the expectations of the people who once elected him as Deputy Governor of Imo State.

“Remaining there will be a disservice to the very people who once voted me as Deputy Governor of Imo State,” he declared.

He further explained that his political shift was rooted in the need to unite like-minded individuals committed to restoring democratic rights and privileges for citizens. He pledged to focus on youth empowerment, innovation, transparent governance, and inclusive participation in leadership processes under his new political platform.

Appreciation — But Firm Criticism

While announcing the Eze Madumere defection, the former deputy governor expressed appreciation to the APC for the opportunities it gave him, including the chance to serve as Deputy Governor of Imo State. He acknowledged the relationships he built during his time in the ruling party and the experiences that shaped his political growth.

However, he maintained that his exit was borne out of necessity rather than malice.

“I have come in terms with the notion that I could no longer continue to be an appendage of a party that does not reward loyalty but is frequently in the habit of disrespecting and marginalising members who have stuck their lives for the unity, progress and development of the society,” Madumere said.

According to him, internal conflicts within the APC, loss of ideological direction, and what he described as consistent disregard for committed members made it impossible for him to fulfil his promises to the people.

Political observers say the language used in his declaration letter signals deeper dissatisfaction within certain factions of the APC in Imo State, although the party is yet to issue an official response as of the time of filing this report.

Implications for Imo Politics

The Eze Madumere defection is widely regarded as a significant development in Imo State politics, particularly as parties begin strategic alignments ahead of future electoral contests. Analysts suggest that Madumere’s movement to the PDP could influence political calculations in the state, especially given his political experience and grassroots connections.

Madumere has long been considered an influential political figure in Imo State, having served at the highest levels of state governance. His transition to the PDP may strengthen the opposition party’s structure in the state and potentially reshape alliances within the political landscape.

Beyond party politics, Madumere’s emphasis on democratic ideals, youth empowerment, and transparent governance appears designed to resonate with younger voters and civil society groups seeking reforms in political culture.

A Broader Democratic Narrative

The former deputy governor framed the Eze Madumere defection as part of a broader effort to safeguard democratic values and restore faith in political institutions. By stressing the importance of rewarding loyalty, upholding internal democracy, and respecting members’ contributions, he positioned his move as a principled stand rather than a mere strategic realignment.

Observers note that political defections remain a recurring feature of Nigeria’s democratic system, often reflecting internal party struggles, ideological shifts, or strategic repositioning ahead of elections. In Madumere’s case, he has sought to present his move as an act of conscience and responsibility toward his constituents.

As reactions continue to trail the announcement, stakeholders within both the APC and PDP are expected to weigh the political consequences of the development in the coming days.

For now, the Eze Madumere defection stands as one of the most talked-about political developments in Imo State, underscoring the fluid nature of party alignments in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.

The iNews Times will continue to monitor reactions from party officials, political stakeholders, and civic groups as the story unfolds.
