Internal Feud Over Governorship Ticket Sparks Fresh Political Tension in Abia.

Umuahia, Abia State – The iNews Times | The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) https://labourpartynigeria.com.ng has raised the alarm over the escalating Abia APC crisis, urging the opposition All Progressives Congress to prevent its internal political disagreements from degenerating into actions that could threaten the peace and security of the state.

In a strongly worded statement, the LP expressed concern that the ongoing media attacks between supporters of APC aspirant Eric Opah and former Minister Henry Ikoh over the governorship ticket could disrupt the relative calm Abia residents currently enjoy.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Abia State has witnessed significant political realignments since the Labour Party’s victory in the 2023 governorship election, which ushered in Governor Alex Otti’s administration. The APC, which previously held sway in the state, has struggled with internal cohesion amid efforts to reposition itself for future contests. The current feud within the APC highlights deeper issues of candidate selection and party loyalty that have plagued Nigerian politics, particularly in the Southeast.

Key Developments

The Labour Party, through its Publicity Secretary, Iroegbu Emenike, pointed out that one major factor fueling the Abia APC crisis is the widespread perception that the party sidelined long-standing loyal members in favour of individuals with substantial financial influence.

The statement criticised what it described as the “merchandising of party tickets” from House of Assembly positions to the governorship, where preference is allegedly given to the highest bidders over committed party faithful. This practice, according to the LP, has continued to generate resentment, division, and internal conflicts.

“As a responsible ruling party, we are not interested in knowing who emerges as the candidate of the APC or any other political party. However, we are concerned about the safety of Abians and residents, especially when political disagreements begin to spill into the public domain in a manner capable of heating up the polity,” the Labour Party said.

Reactions from Stakeholders

The APC fired back, dismissing the LP’s concerns and accusing it of belonging to the “Nvosi faction,” where tickets were allegedly allocated through intimidation and undemocratic means.

Speaking through its Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC advised the LP’s “Nvosi faction” to concentrate on its pending case at the Supreme Court to determine its true status. The party maintained that the APC in Abia remains united under the leadership of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.

“Unfortunately, a government that claims to enjoy widespread popularity is evidently terrified of facing a vibrant opposition at the ballot box, rather than prepare to defend its record before the electorate,” the Abia APC stated.

Implications

The Abia APC crisis carries significant political weight as the state prepares for future electoral cycles. Analysts note that persistent internal wrangling within the APC could weaken the opposition, potentially consolidating the Labour Party’s hold on power. However, if unchecked, the public nature of the feud risks creating anxiety among residents and investors in a state still recovering from years of infrastructural neglect and political instability.

Economically, sustained political tension could undermine ongoing development efforts under Governor Otti, particularly in areas such as road infrastructure, healthcare, and ease of doing business, which have attracted cautious optimism from Abians.

What Happens Next

Political observers expect the APC to intensify efforts towards reconciliation or formalise its candidate selection process as the 2027 elections draw closer. The Labour Party, meanwhile, is likely to continue positioning itself as the defender of public peace while leveraging its incumbency advantage. The Supreme Court case referenced by the APC may also provide further clarity on the opposition’s organisational status in the coming months.

Conclusion

As Abia continues its journey towards sustainable development and political maturity, The iNews Times will continue to monitor these unfolding dynamics. The resolution of the Abia APC crisis will not only test the opposition’s readiness but also determine whether political actors can prioritise the state’s stability over personal ambitions. Peace and security remain paramount for Abians who deserve focused governance rather than avoidable distractions.
