ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| The Anambra State Government has vowed to track down and prosecute the gunmen responsible for the deadly attack on the convoy of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Chief of Staff, Ben Nwankwo.
Dr. Nwankwo, a former federal lawmaker who was recently confirmed as the governor’s Chief of Staff, came under attack from unidentified gunmen on Sunday night while returning from an official assignment.
The ambush reportedly claimed the lives of four people, including two security operatives attached to the governor’s aide and one of his close associates.
While the police had earlier assured residents that efforts were underway to apprehend the attackers, the state government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that those behind the assault are brought to justice.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, the government described the attack as a direct assault on the peace, security, and democratic stability of the state.
“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the government and people of Anambra,” the statement said.
The government expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured them that justice would be pursued.
“Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice. The Anambra State Government sends its deepest condolences to the families of those who died and shares in their grief,” the statement added.
Authorities emphasized that the incident would not derail ongoing efforts to combat crime and maintain security across the state.
“This isolated incident, after more than one year of peace and security in the state, will not affect our determination to remove all forms of crime from Anambra,” the government stated.
According to the statement, security agencies, including the police, have launched investigations and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend all those involved in the attack.
The incident occurred between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2026, along the Orumba North – Awka South border area as Nwankwo was returning from an official engagement.
The government assured residents that no stone would be left unturned in the pursuit of the perpetrators, stressing that the state remains committed to protecting lives and property.
