CANADA- The iNews Time| Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada has approved 3,463 asylum applications submitted by Nigerians in 2025, while 21,573 claims remained unresolved by year-end, highlighting growing migration pressures.
According to the board, Nigerians filed 6,765 asylum claims during the year, with 5,039 cases concluded. Of these, 3,463 were approved, 1,377 rejected, while others were either withdrawn or abandoned, resulting in an approval rate of about 68 per cent.
Nigeria ranked among the top countries of origin for asylum seekers in Canada, alongside India, Haiti, Iran, and Mexico.
Under the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, application is granted to individuals who can demonstrate a credible fear of persecution or risk of serious harm in their home country.
The IRB noted that applications can be submitted at entry points or from within Canada, after which they are assessed based on evidence and legal criteria.
Successful applicants receive protected status and may apply for permanent residency, while unsuccessful claims could lead to deportation.
The data also showed that Canada handled over 107,000 application claims across all nationalities in 2025, reflecting continued global displacement trends driven by instability and conflict.
