The Ex-Fed Commissioner said his ambition. is rooted in a broader economic vision.
Ukpor, Nigeria — The iNews Times | Ex-Fed Commissioner Obunike Callistus Ohaegbu has formally declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, vowing that his mission to the National Assembly will go far beyond what he described as “boreholes and streetlights politics.”
The former Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission made the declaration on Saturday at his country home in Ebe, Ukpor, in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing his decision as “difficult but deliberate” after wide consultations with family members and political associates.
The Ex-Fed Commissioner, popularly known as “Nwa Miss,” said his ambition under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is rooted in a broader economic vision for the constituency and the Southeast region, rather than small-scale constituency projects often associated with legislative offices.
According to him, representation at the National Assembly must focus on structural transformation capable of unlocking industrial growth, trade expansion and large-scale job creation.
He pointed to projects he is currently championing as National Coordinator of the Southeast Patriots, including gas infrastructure development to power industries across the Southeast, revitalisation of eastern seaports to reduce pressure on Lagos ports, dredging of the River Niger to boost inland waterway commerce, and completion of the Port Harcourt–Aba–Enugu–Maiduguri rail corridor.
“These are the real issues that will create jobs, empower our people and reposition our region economically,” he said.
In a political environment where many federal lawmakers are judged primarily by visible constituency projects such as boreholes, solar streetlights and mini empowerment schemes, the Ex-Fed Commissioner insisted that such initiatives, though useful, do not address the deeper structural challenges facing the Southeast.
Political analysts say his statement signals an attempt to reshape campaign discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially at a time when conversations around economic restructuring, regional integration and infrastructure deficit dominate national debates.
Nigeria’s persistent inflation, youth unemployment and industrial slowdown have placed increased pressure on lawmakers to pursue policies that generate long-term economic impact rather than short-term political visibility.
Recounting his early life struggles, Ohaegbu spoke about losing his father shortly after birth and being raised by his mother, whose eventual career as a teacher was made possible through the intervention of a community leader. He said those formative experiences shaped his commitment to service and grassroots development.
The Ex-Fed Commissioner highlighted his tenure at the Public Complaints Commission, where he said he facilitated employment opportunities and interventions for constituents. He also referenced community development efforts carried out through the Odi Mma Ukpor platform.
While he avoided direct attacks on the current representative of the constituency, he suggested that leadership outcomes are often products of systemic political processes rather than individual failure. He called for unity across Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo local government areas, urging stakeholders to rally behind what he described as a transformative agenda.
Addressing concerns from local traders, Ohaegbu cited a recent engagement at Nkwo Nnewi market where business owners raised complaints about regulatory bottlenecks and economic hardship.
He pledged to advocate fairer trade policies and stronger institutional protections for small and medium-scale enterprises if elected, noting that Nnewi remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent industrial hubs.
Economic observers note that the Nnewi axis, long known for indigenous manufacturing and auto-parts production, has faced operational pressures due to foreign exchange volatility, rising energy costs and import policy uncertainty.
By focusing on gas infrastructure and rail connectivity, the Ex-Fed Commissioner appears to be aligning his campaign with broader calls for industrial competitiveness in the Southeast.
Ohaegbu reaffirmed loyalty to the leadership of the African Democratic Congress, referencing national figures within the party and its growing coalition efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
He encouraged grassroots mobilisation and voter registration, declaring that political change would require sustained citizen participation.
“The difference starts with you,” he told supporters as he formally unveiled his campaign slogan, “Nwa Miss 2027.”
The declaration adds another layer to the emerging contest for the Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency seat, a strategic district in Anambra’s political landscape.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, political realignments and new entrants are expected to intensify across parties, particularly as opposition platforms seek to consolidate influence in the Southeast.
As Nigeria navigates economic reforms, infrastructure gaps and renewed calls for regional equity, the entry of an Ex-Fed Commissioner into the House of Representatives race underscores a growing trend: technocrats and former public office holders repositioning for legislative influence.
