EZINIHITTE MBAISE, IMO STATE — The iNews Times reports that the Ezinihitte Mbaise Vice Chairman suspension has sent shockwaves across Imo State following allegations of armed robbery and administrative misconduct leveled against Prince Mathew Igbokwe.

The Legislative Assembly of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area announced the indefinite suspension of the Vice Chairman during a plenary session presided over by the Leader of the House, Benson Mgbechi. The decision, according to an official press statement issued by the legislative members, followed what they described as serious allegations that have allegedly tarnished the image of the council.

The motion for the suspension was moved by Chief Whip Ajaa Echezolachi and seconded by Deputy Leader Steven Echeta before being adopted by members present at the sitting.

As part of the resolution, the Assembly issued a seven-day ultimatum directing the suspended Vice Chairman to appear before the legislative body to respond to the allegations against him.

According to the statement, the Ezinihitte Mbaise Vice Chairman suspension was deemed necessary to uphold the integrity of the office and prevent further reputational damage to the council.

The lawmakers stressed that their action was procedural and grounded in legislative authority, pending further investigation and clarification of the claims.

Beyond the armed robbery allegation, the Assembly accused Igbokwe of repeated administrative infractions. These include consistent absence from official duties and traveling outside Imo State without obtaining prior approval from the appropriate authorities within the council.

The press statement described such actions as a dereliction of duty and a breach of official protocols expected of a high-ranking public servant.

“Such actions are considered a dereliction of duty and a breach of official protocols expected of a high-ranking public servant,” the statement read.

Legislative members argued that accountability and discipline are central to maintaining public trust in local governance structures, particularly at a time when citizens demand greater transparency from elected officials.

The most serious accusation cited in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Vice Chairman suspension relates to alleged involvement in armed robbery and other unspecified criminal activities.

According to the Legislative Assembly, the allegation is reportedly substantiated by his arrest and detention by the Lagos State Police Command, which they described as a critical piece of evidence.

While further details of the alleged incident were not provided in the statement, the Assembly emphasized that the gravity of the accusation necessitated immediate legislative intervention.

“The most damaging of the accusations is that Igbokwe is alleged to be involved in armed robbery and other unspecified crimes,” the release stated.

The Assembly further noted that the reported arrest has subjected the council to public scrutiny and ridicule.

Lawmakers expressed concern that the controversy surrounding the Vice Chairman has brought embarrassment not only to the local government but also to the wider Imo State administration.

“Igbokwe’s alleged odious activities have brought immense shame and ridicule upon the Government of Imo State, the Executive Chairman of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government and the entire populace of the Council,” the statement declared.

They insisted that the Ezinihitte Mbaise Vice Chairman suspension was aimed at safeguarding the reputation of the council and demonstrating zero tolerance for misconduct.

The legislative leadership maintained that swift and decisive action was necessary to reassure residents that public office holders are accountable under the law.

The Assembly stated that its decision was firmly rooted in the provisions of Law No. 6 of 2022, guiding the administration of local government councils, as amended.

According to the lawmakers, the expedited action aligns with constitutional and statutory mandates empowering legislative arms of local governments to discipline executive officials when necessary.

They argued that failure to act promptly could erode public confidence and undermine governance at the grassroots level.

The Ezinihitte Mbaise Vice Chairman suspension raises broader questions about accountability and ethical standards in Nigeria’s local government system.

Local governments represent the closest tier of administration to the people, and controversies involving senior officials often trigger widespread public reactions.

Political observers say the coming days will determine whether the suspended Vice Chairman appears before the Assembly to defend himself and clarify the allegations.

If criminal investigations are ongoing, the case could also attract attention from state and federal law enforcement agencies.

With the seven-day ultimatum in effect, attention now shifts to whether Prince Mathew Igbokwe will respond to the legislative summons.

As of the time of filing this report, no official response has been issued by the suspended Vice Chairman regarding the allegations or his suspension.

The iNews Times will continue to monitor developments surrounding the Ezinihitte Mbaise Vice Chairman suspension, ensuring balanced and verified updates as events unfold.

For residents of Ezinihitte Mbaise and Imo State at large, the unfolding situation underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law in public office.
