LAGOS, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| No fewer than 12 facilities, including hotels, shopping complexes, and residential buildings, have been closed by the Lagos State Government for repeatedly breaching lift and elevator safety rules.
The affected properties are situated in major locations such as Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase 1 and parts of Ikeja.
Buildings sealed during the exercise include The Heritage/AXA on Awolowo Road, Ikeja; Mosesola House, Debour House, and Bosch House on Soji Adepegba Close; as well as Bridge View, Elizabeth Court, 10Bou Towers, Brion Court, Footprints Apartments, Lekki Luxury Flats, and Brasas Mall, all located along Admiralty Way, Lekki.
The enforcement operation, which took place last Thursday, was carried out by the Lagos State Safety Commission.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the commission said the action followed persistent refusal by several property owners and operators to comply with mandatory elevator safety standards.
According to the agency, the affected facilities failed to register their lift systems with the state government, a requirement necessary for proper inspection, routine maintenance, and overall safety monitoring.
Speaking during the operation, the Commission’s Chief Scientific Officer, Sovi Tijani, who represented the Director-General, Lanre Mojola, said the clampdown became necessary due to continued disregard for safety regulations.
He explained that registering elevator systems is essential to enable regular inspections and ensure the safety of occupants in both residential and commercial buildings.
Tijani added that the affected property owners had been issued several notices and reminders but failed to comply within the given timeframe.
“We served them notices informing them to comply before the deadline expired, but they ignored them.
“Some refused to receive the letters from our officials, while others even attempted to obstruct enforcement activities,” he said.
He stressed that the Lagos State Safety commission would continue its enforcement drive to protect lives and property, warning that poorly maintained elevators pose serious safety hazards.
The commission also advised building owners and facility managers to adhere strictly to safety regulations by registering their lift systems and carrying out regular maintenance in line with government standards.
It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe environment, noting that defaulters would continue to face penalties until they meet all regulatory requirements.
