LAGOS, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Multiple vehicles were involved in collisions on Lagos roads on Sunday, sparking chaos, leaving motorists stranded for hours, and causing severe traffic congestion.

On the notorious Kara Bridge stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, multiple collision involving a flour-laden truck that toppled onto its side, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota RAV4 SUV, and two loaded interstate Mazda buses blocked several lanes, creating gridlock. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident on its X handle.

“A multiple vehicle crash involving a truck that fell on its side, a Corolla, an SUV, and two interstate buses has been reported on Kara Bridge towards Mowe,” the agency stated. Eyewitnesses reported traffic backups extending as far as Alausa Secretariat, with congestion persisting from the afternoon well into the evening.

LASTMA emergency crews swiftly removed the wrecked vehicles, partially reopening lanes and restoring traffic flow. The agency advised motorists to remain patient as recovery operations continued. Officers were stationed along heavily congested areas, including Magodo, Omole Junction, and Ogunnusi Road, working in coordination with the Federal Road Safety Corps.

In a separate incident on the Ojota inbound Ketu axis of Ikorodu Road, a Volkswagen commercial bus was involved in another multiple accidents involving three-vehicles, leaving its driver with fractured limbs. Preliminary reports indicated that a Toyota Sienna had slowed to allow pedestrians to cross, with a mini-truck behind it. The speeding Volkswagen bus failed to stop, crashing violently into the stationary vehicles.

LASTMA responders quickly arrived on the scene, using specialized equipment to free the trapped driver, who was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Prompt intervention prevented further accidents and helped restore traffic flow. Nigeria Police officers from Area ‘H’ Ogudu Division secured the scene and controlled the crowd.

The Lagos State Government, through Special Adviser on Transportation Sola Giwa, extended prayers for the driver’s speedy recovery and urged all motorists to exercise caution on the roads. Giwa commended LASTMA for its rapid response and professionalism, emphasizing that adherence to speed limits, patience, and vigilance, particularly in high pedestrian zones is crucial for preventing road accidents.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to continuous traffic monitoring, swift response to incidents, and proactive management of traffic flow, calling on all road users to cooperate with officials and comply with regulations to ensure public safety.
