National Grid Suffers Fresh Collapse as Power Output Plummets to 24MW

..recent grid failures have been linked to a mix of technical challenges,

ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The national power grid suffered another collapse, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and cutting electricity supply to millions of homes and businesses.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that power generation fell drastically from over 4,500 megawatts to about 24 megawatts as of 1:30 p.m.

During the incident, all 23 power generation plants connected to the grid reportedly went offline, leading to zero electricity allocation for the 11 distribution companies.

The cause of the system failure was not immediately clear, as the Transmission Company of Nigeria had yet to release a detailed statement at the time of filing this report.

This represents the first grid collapse recorded in 2026, occurring just weeks after a similar outage on December 29, 2025, which also triggered widespread power disruptions nationwide.

According to reports, recent grid failures have been linked to a mix of technical challenges, poor maintenance of transmission infrastructure, and instability in generation capacity.

Stakeholders have repeatedly urged the government and power sector operators to put in place stronger contingency measures to curb recurring system failures.

As Nigerians await an official explanation, the latest collapse has once again highlighted growing concerns about the state of the country’s electricity infrastructure and its ability to meet rising demand for reliable power.
