…the PDP congress process will be critical to repositioning the party ahead of the 2027.
Abuja, Nigeria – The iNews Times | The PDP congress process is expected to commence soon as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) intensifies internal preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a series of favourable court rulings in its ongoing leadership dispute.
The assurance was given on Wednesday by Abdulrahman Mohammed, Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), during a meeting with the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
Speaking during the briefing, Mohammed said the party had already completed key grassroots exercises, including ward and local government congresses, and would soon proceed with the next stage of the PDP congress process.
According to him, the upcoming state congresses will pave the way for the party’s national convention, which is expected to produce substantive national officers ahead of the next election cycle.
He disclosed that party officials had also inspected the Moshood Abiola National Stadium as a possible venue for the national convention.
Mohammed noted that while preparations are advancing, the party leadership is awaiting the Certified True Copy (CTC) of recent judgments delivered by the Court of Appeal concerning the PDP’s leadership dispute.
He explained that the documents would enable the party’s legal team to prepare adequately for any further legal proceedings that might arise at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
“However, as we proceed with the preparations towards our National Convention, we shall wait for the Certified True Copy of the judgments by the Court of Appeal to prepare ourselves for further defence at the Supreme Court, if the need arises,” Mohammed stated.
The NCWC chairman also used the occasion to appeal to party stakeholders to close ranks and avoid further internal conflicts that could hinder the PDP congress timetable and the party’s broader electoral preparations.
“I want to call on all party stakeholders, leaders and members to unite ourselves for the betterment of our great party. Enough of litigations that will delay our activities towards the 2027 general elections and off-season elections,” he said.
Mohammed reaffirmed the significance of the party’s Board of Trustees, describing it as the moral compass of the PDP and a stabilising institution during challenging times.
“BoT remains the conscience of the party, and we shall continue to work together to deliver on the mandate given to us,” he added.
Highlighting recent legal developments, Mohammed said the party recorded major victories at the Court of Appeal, where several cases related to the leadership dispute were decided in its favour.
According to him, the appellate court ruled in favour of the PDP in nine appeals, a development he described as a major boost for the legitimacy of the current caretaker leadership.
“We are the only legitimate body that can present candidates for the 2027 general elections. I urge everyone to rally around us,” he said.
Political observers believe the completion of the PDP congress process will be critical to repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as it seeks to strengthen internal cohesion and rebuild its national structures.
The forthcoming congresses and national convention are expected to shape the PDP’s leadership structure and determine the direction of Africa’s once-dominant ruling party as it prepares for the next electoral contest.
