Party chieftain insists his faction remains legitimate as battle shifts to Supreme Court judgment.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | PDP leadership crisis took a dramatic turn on Thursday as a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party https://peoplesdemocraticparty.com.ng, Umar Sani, accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of deploying intimidation tactics to undermine rival factions within the party.

Sani alleged that Wike has been using the instruments of his office as FCT minister to frustrate meetings and destabilise opponents, describing the alleged actions as “the last kick of a dying horse” in a deepening internal struggle for control of the party’s structure.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The PDP leadership crisis has simmered for months, with factions laying claim to the party’s authentic leadership amid court rulings, internal suspensions, and power tussles at the national secretariat.

The crisis intensified following legal battles that culminated in a recent Supreme Court judgment, the full implications of which are still being awaited by the competing blocs within the party.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and now FCT minister under the current administration, has remained a central and controversial figure in the unfolding political drama.

Key Developments

Speaking during Arise Television’s Morning Show, Sani dismissed what he described as systematic attempts to disrupt meetings organised by his faction.

He alleged that whenever meetings perceived to be unfavourable to Wike’s camp were scheduled, measures were allegedly taken to seal party facilities under administrative pretexts.

According to Sani, similar tactics were employed during the tenure of acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, including the sealing of the party’s National Secretariat and annex office, popularly known as the Legacy House, over alleged issues such as unpaid ground rent and tenement rates.

“He knows where we have been holding meetings. He knows the place, and he has not sealed it off yet. He can’t,” Sani said.

He insisted that members of his group were unperturbed by the alleged intimidation, maintaining that they remain the legitimate leadership of the PDP.

The PDP leadership crisis, he argued, is now at a decisive stage, with his faction awaiting the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment to determine the next line of action.

“We are just waiting for the CTC of the Supreme Court judgment for them to pack their bags and baggage and leave Wadata Plaza to his office,” Sani stated, suggesting that the legal verdict would clarify control of the party’s national secretariat.

Reactions from Stakeholders

While Wike has yet to publicly respond to the latest allegations, allies of the FCT minister have previously denied claims of interference in party affairs, insisting that administrative actions taken within the FCT fall strictly within the law.

Political observers note that the PDP leadership crisis has exposed deep fractures within the opposition party, raising concerns about its readiness ahead of future electoral contests.

A senior party member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The iNews Times that “the party must find a political solution quickly, or risk further erosion of public confidence.”

Implications

The PDP leadership crisis carries significant implications for Nigeria’s opposition politics.

As one of the country’s major political parties, prolonged instability within the PDP could weaken its ability to mount a formidable challenge in upcoming elections and diminish its bargaining power in national discourse.

The public exchange of accusations also risks deepening factional loyalties, making reconciliation increasingly difficult.

Beyond internal party politics, the allegations involving the FCT minister raise questions about the intersection of public office and partisan disputes, a sensitive issue in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

What Happens Next

All eyes are now on the release of the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment, which Sani believes will define the next chapter of the PDP leadership crisis.

Legal interpretations of the ruling are expected to shape claims to legitimacy and possibly trigger fresh alignments within the party.

Whether the crisis will be resolved through negotiation, judicial clarification, or further confrontation remains uncertain.

Conclusion

As the PDP leadership crisis deepens, accusations of intimidation and counterclaims of legitimacy underscore the fragile state of unity within one of Nigeria’s leading political parties.

With the awaited Supreme Court documentation poised to influence the balance of power, the coming weeks may prove decisive for the future direction of the PDP and its role in the nation’s political landscape.
