…as Dakas pledges a deliberate push to reform and repeal obsolete laws.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated Professor Dakas Dakas as Chairman and Uchenna Eugene as Commissioner of the Nigeria Law Reform Commission, charging them to lead a sweeping overhaul of the country’s outdated legal framework.

The brief swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council meeting.

The Nigeria Law Reform Commission, a statutory body responsible for reviewing, updating, and recommending changes to Nigeria’s laws, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s legal framework reflects current social, economic, and political realities.

During the FEC meeting, members also observed a solemn one-minute silence in honour of former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, who died on August 9 at the age of 78.

Speaking after his inauguration, Prof. Dakas pledged a deliberate push to reform and repeal obsolete laws, many of which date back to the colonial era.

“We will be deliberate about identifying and proposing for reform some of the very obsolete laws that we have,” he said. “Quite a number of our laws date back to the colonial era and remain on the statute books. Many of them are not fit for purpose.”

He emphasised that the Commission’s work will focus not only on amendments but on deleting laws that no longer serve Nigeria’s aspirations, working closely with the National Assembly and the executive arm to restore public confidence in the legal system.

“Our goal is not just to amend but to actively delete laws that hinder progress and no longer align with the nation’s aspirations,” Dakas affirmed, promising a more responsive and modern legal system for all Nigerians.
