Tinubu Departs on Two-Nation Tour

…during his stay in Japan, President Tinubu is expected to attend plenary sessions, hold bilateral talks with various world leaders.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday departed Abuja for a two-nation official visit to Japan and Brazil, making a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, along the way.

The President’s aircraft took off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 11:15 a.m., with senior government officials, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of Finance Wale Edun, present to bid him farewell.

According to a statement released on Thursday by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President’s first engagement will be in Yokohama, Japan, where he will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22.

This year’s TICAD conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation through increased private investment, innovative strategies, and stronger institutional frameworks. During his stay in Japan, President Tinubu is expected to attend plenary sessions, hold bilateral talks with various world leaders, and meet with Japanese business executives, particularly companies that have existing or potential investment interests in Nigeria.

TICAD was launched in 1993 by the Japanese government and is co-hosted by the United Nations, the UN Development Programme, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank. Held every three years, the conference alternates between Japan and African host nations, with the last edition taking place in Tunisia in 2022.

Following his engagements in Japan, President Tinubu will proceed to Brazil for a state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His itinerary in Brazil includes bilateral discussions with his host, active participation in a Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum, and the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding aimed at deepening economic cooperation between the two nations.

The President is travelling with a high-level delegation made up of ministers and senior aides, who will accompany him in exploring new trade and investment opportunities in both Japan and Brazil.
