Nigerian Senate go tough on kidnappers with death penalty

…says upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.

Abuja, Nigeria — The iNews Times | The Nigerian Senate has adopted a landmark resolution classifying kidnapping as an act of terrorism and calling for amendments to the Terrorism Act to ensure that convicted kidnappers automatically face the death penalty.

During plenary on Wednesday, lawmakers unanimously agreed that the country’s escalating kidnapping crisis demands a far stronger legal response, insisting that the most severe punishment is necessary to deter criminals.

According to the resolution, “upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.” Senators argued that the rising wave of abductions affecting travellers, students and entire communities has reached a level that threatens national security and public safety.

The chamber maintained that categorizing kidnapping as terrorism provides a clearer legal framework for punishing offenders and sending a strong message to kidnapping syndicates across the nation.

Further legislative action, including amendments to the Terrorism Act, is expected in the coming weeks.
