Fresh dispute erupts in Abia as aspirant challenges declared outcome, appeal committee begins sitting in Umuahia.

UMUAHIA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | APC Abia Primaries 2026 took a dramatic turn on Sunday as an aspirant for the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Onyeije Onuoha-Kalu, publicly rejected the outcome announced by the All Progressives Congress https://www.allprogressivescongress.org APC’s state committee and declared himself the rightful winner of the contest.

The Abia State National Assembly Primary Election Committee, chaired by Barrister Erasmus Cishak, had on Saturday announced Ikenna Nicholas as winner of the primary election. However, Kalu insists the figures from the wards show a different outcome and has vowed not to concede.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The APC Abia Primaries 2026 were conducted across various federal constituencies in the state to determine the party’s candidates for the 2027 general elections.

In Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, which comprises 22 wards split evenly between Arochukwu and Ohafia Local Government Areas, the contest was closely watched due to the political weight of the aspirants involved.

Following the declaration of Ikenna Nicholas as winner, murmurs of dissatisfaction emerged within party ranks, setting the stage for the current dispute.

Key Developments

Addressing journalists in Umuahia on Sunday, Onyeije Onuoha-Kalu maintained that he secured victory in 15 out of the 22 wards in the constituency during the May 16 primary election.

According to him, he won eight of the 11 wards in Arochukwu Local Government Area and seven of the 11 wards in Ohafia LGA, giving him what he described as a clear majority across the constituency.

“We have 22 wards in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, and out of that, I won 15,” Kalu stated. “I’m here to thank the people of Arochukwu and Ohafia for their support and to commend party leaders for ensuring the process went smoothly.”

When asked why he refused to concede despite another candidate being declared winner, Kalu insisted that the primary process was still ongoing and that there remained room for proper declaration.

“Our party is law-abiding, and we practice the rule of law. There is no need for the party not to uphold the rule of law,” he said.

Meanwhile, the APC National Assembly Primaries Appeal Committee has commenced sitting in Abia State to receive complaints arising from the exercise.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Chief Uche Aguoru, announced that the committee, chaired by Chris Dajan, would sit at the party’s new state secretariat on Finbard Road in Umuahia.

The statement encouraged any dissatisfied aspirant to formally submit petitions or appeals for fair and objective consideration, in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines approved by the National Working Committee.

Reactions from Stakeholders

While Ikenna Nicholas is yet to publicly respond to Kalu’s claims, party insiders told The iNews Times that the appeal committee’s intervention could prove decisive in settling the dispute.

Kalu, however, used the opportunity to urge party members to remain united and to rally behind a governorship aspirant within the party, Chief Henry Ikoh.

Describing Ikoh as a successful industrialist with a track record of job creation and integrity, Kalu said the party needed experienced hands to reposition the state.

“It is not easy to build a company to that height. It takes an industrialist to build an industry, and he has been giving a lot of people jobs,” he said. “We are confident in him. He is a man of integrity, and with his experience, we believe he will turn things around.”

Political observers say the dual messaging rejecting the primary outcome while promoting party unity reflects a delicate balancing act by Kalu as he seeks redress without alienating party leadership.

Implications

The unfolding dispute within the APC Abia Primaries 2026 underscores the fragile nature of internal party democracy in the lead-up to 2027.

If not carefully managed, such disagreements could deepen factional divides within the party at both the constituency and state levels.

However, the activation of the appeal committee provides a structured pathway for conflict resolution, potentially preventing protracted litigation that has plagued party primaries in previous election cycles.

The credibility of the appeal process will be closely scrutinized, as it may influence voter perception of the APC’s commitment to fairness and transparency.

What Happens Next

Attention now shifts to the deliberations of the National Assembly Primaries Appeal Committee sitting in Umuahia.

Should the committee uphold the initial declaration, aggrieved parties may consider further legal or political steps. Conversely, any reversal could significantly alter the political dynamics within Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.

For now, stakeholders await the committee’s findings, which are expected to shape the APC’s strategy in the constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Conclusion

The APC Abia Primaries 2026 have entered a critical phase as Onyeije Onuoha-Kalu challenges the declared outcome and insists he won the Arochukwu/Ohafia ticket.

With the appeal committee now in session, the coming days will determine whether the dispute is resolved internally or escalates further.

As developments unfold, The iNews Times will continue to provide in-depth coverage and analysis of the political currents shaping Abia State ahead of 2027.
