Major inter-agency operation in Governor Soludo’s community yields four firearms, charms and two Toyota vehicles.

AWKA, NIGERIA — The iNews Times | Anambra joint security operatives have arrested nine suspected members of a murderous kidnap and car-snatching syndicate and recovered three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, assorted charms and two vehicles during a coordinated stop-and-search operation in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area.

The early-hours action on Thursday, August 28, 2026, took place in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s hometown, a few kilometres south-west of the state capital and a key gateway into Imo, Abia, Rivers and Enugu states. The operation was directed by the Joint Operation Base, Aguata, under Chief Superintendent of Police Austin Elaigwu and involved personnel from the Police, Army, Navy, Department of State Services https://www.dss.gov.ng, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps https://nscdc.gov.ng, Nigeria Immigration Service https://immigration.gov.ng and the Agunechemba state vigilante outfit.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Anambra State has faced recurring threats from organised kidnap gangs and car-snatching networks that exploit transit corridors linking the South-East to neighbouring states. Isuofia’s strategic position has long made it a focus of intelligence-driven security efforts. The hybrid model that pairs federal forces with the state-backed Agunechemba vigilante group reflects Governor Soludo’s emphasis on layered policing to protect both residents and travellers.

Key Developments

Operatives intercepted a custom-coloured Toyota Sienna and an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4 at a security checkpoint in Isuofia. Seven men and two women travelling in the vehicles were detained. A detailed search produced three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, various charms and other incriminating items.

The suspects and exhibits were moved into custody. During preliminary interrogation the nine claimed to be security personnel from a neighbouring state. They could not, however, satisfactorily explain their identities, affiliations, the source of the firearms or the reason for their presence in Anambra.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrests in an official statement to journalists. “The team acted on credible intelligence and executed a thorough stop-and-search that yielded significant recoveries,” he said.

Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama commended the operatives. “This outcome demonstrates the value of intelligence-led policing and seamless inter-agency cooperation,” the CP stated. “I urge all personnel to remain vigilant as we continue to deny criminal elements freedom of movement across the state.”

Implications

The recovery of military-grade rifles alongside traditional charms illustrates the dual tactics employed by contemporary criminal networks. The location of the operation inside the governor’s community carries symbolic weight, reinforcing that no area is off-limits to security forces. Successful interdiction on a major inter-state route also strengthens public confidence in ongoing efforts to secure commercial and passenger traffic through the South-East.

What Happens Next

The nine suspects remain in custody for further interrogation. Investigators will examine possible links to security formations in a neighbouring state, the origin of the recovered weapons, and any wider syndicate connections. Additional intelligence-led operations are expected along strategic corridors in Aguata and adjoining local government areas.

Conclusion

Thursday’s action by Anambra joint security operatives underscores the determination of state and federal agencies to disrupt violent criminal enterprises. Sustained vigilance, multi-agency coordination and community intelligence remain central to protecting lives and livelihoods. The iNews Times will continue to track developments as the investigation advances and further details emerge from the Anambra State Police Command.
