Nigeria and Ghana dropped from England’s fast-track teacher status list amid verification concerns, leaving South Africa as sole African nation eligible.

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The iNews Times | The United Kingdom has excluded Nigerian teachers from the streamlined route to Qualified Teacher Status, ending a pathway that once offered a direct route into English classrooms for educators trained in Nigeria, Ghana and India.

The Department for Education https://www.gov.uk confirmed the change took effect on 9 September 2026, according to updated guidance. The decision follows data showing high rejection rates and persistent difficulties verifying professional references from applicants in Nigeria and Ghana. India was removed because it lacks a national regulator able to confirm teachers’ professional standing.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications for Nigerian educators seeking opportunities abroad.

Background of the Story

Qualified Teacher Status remains the professional accreditation required to teach in most state-maintained schools in England. For years, teachers trained in selected overseas jurisdictions could apply through a dedicated online service if they met degree, induction and experience thresholds. Nigeria and Ghana featured on that list, reflecting the significant numbers of educators from both countries seeking work in the UK.

Data released by the Department for Education on 27 August 2026 for the 2024–2025 academic year revealed the scale of interest and the challenges. Nigeria submitted 1,076 applications; 364 received QTS while 599 were declined. Ghana recorded 1,067 applications, with only 196 successful and 749 rejected. Officials noted that more than 70 per cent of references from the two West African nations arrived from public email addresses such as Gmail or Hotmail rather than official school domains, forcing assessors to spend extra time and resources confirming authenticity.

Key Developments

From 9 September 2026, teachers trained in Nigeria, Ghana or India are no longer eligible to use the “Apply for QTS in England” service. The Department for Education stated that eligibility now requires a national regulator capable of confirming professional standing and references that meet strict verification standards. India was excluded for the absence of such a regulator. For Nigeria and Ghana, the volume of unverifiable public-email references proved decisive.

Applicants must still hold a valid passport, an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK bachelor’s, professional recognition in their training country, completion of any mandatory induction, at least nine months of post-qualification teaching experience with children aged five to 16, and employment references from official school email domains. Additional subject or age-range requirements apply for some countries that remain on the list.

Countries and territories still able to use the service include Australia, Canada, the European Economic Area, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Jersey, New Zealand, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United States. Jamaica, Singapore and South Africa may apply under specified conditions. With Nigeria and Ghana removed, South Africa stands as the only African nation retaining access.

Reactions from Stakeholders

A Department for Education spokesperson said the updates ensure overseas teachers awarded QTS possess the skills and experience required in English schools. “We must be confident that information provided by applicants is genuine,” the department stated. “Teachers who are not eligible to apply for QTS in England service can explore other routes into teaching.”

Education analysts in Lagos note that the decision will redirect many Nigerian teachers toward alternative pathways, including school-based training programmes or independent assessment routes that individual English schools may still consider. School leaders in England have long valued the subject expertise and classroom experience that Nigerian and Ghanaian teachers bring, particularly in mathematics and the sciences, yet verification bottlenecks had become a recurring administrative burden.

Implications

The exclusion carries clear consequences for Nigerian educators who had viewed the QTS route as a relatively efficient bridge to professional opportunities in England. High application volumes and rejection rates already signalled friction; the formal removal closes the most straightforward channel. Economically, it may slow the outflow of qualified teachers at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with classroom shortages of its own. Socially, families who planned relocation around teaching contracts will need to reassess timelines and alternative destinations.

For the UK, the move prioritises regulatory confidence and reduces the administrative load on assessors. It also leaves South Africa as the sole African country on the list, potentially concentrating future African applications from that single jurisdiction under tighter subject and age conditions.

What Happens Next

Teachers trained in Nigeria who still wish to work in England must now pursue other routes. These may include employment by individual schools willing to sponsor alternative training or assessment pathways, or applications through programmes that do not rely on the streamlined QTS service. The Department for Education has advised affected teachers to explore these options. Nigerian education authorities and professional bodies are expected to monitor the impact and may engage UK counterparts on future recognition arrangements, though no formal talks have been announced.

Conclusion

The decision to exclude Nigerian teachers from the UK’s dedicated QTS application route marks a significant tightening of overseas qualification standards. By insisting on verifiable professional references and robust national regulation, the Department for Education has prioritised assurance over volume. For Nigerian educators the pathway has narrowed, yet alternative routes remain open and the demand for skilled teachers in England persists. The iNews Times will continue to track how this policy shapes both the aspirations of Nigerian teachers and the staffing realities of English schools.
