In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Federal Road Safety Corps has long been at the forefront of Nigeria’s road safety management, established to reduce the high rate of road traffic incidents that claim thousands of lives annually. Anambra State, with its bustling commercial routes and dense traffic, has historically recorded significant crash figures, particularly during festive seasons. FRSC Operation Total Compliance represents a renewed, intensified strategy to enforce discipline and sensitise motorists ahead of the ember months a period notorious for increased road fatalities due to heightened travel and commercial activities.

Key Developments

During the operation, FRSC operatives documented 27 cases of overloading, 34 violations involving speed limiting devices, 10 instances of driving without valid licences, and four attempts to corrupt officers on duty. Two drivers were also apprehended for dangerous driving and operating under the influence of substances. The exercise combined enforcement with public education, deploying mobile courts for swift prosecution of offenders while reaching out to grassroots communities.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, represented by Deputy Corps Commander Ezeugwu Gloria, addressed journalists on the development. She emphasised the dangers of mixed loading, stating, “Loading human beings and animals or goods is a weapon on its own and can be disastrous in any eventuality. If you want to load goods, don’t combine them with human beings.”

Asekhauno further warned against tampering with speed limiting devices, driving without valid licences, and operating under the influence of alcohol. “All these and other traffic offenses capable of endangering human lives are our targets during the period,” she said, adding that the Corps is leveraging both enforcement and enlightenment campaigns.

The Sector Commander urged motorists to view the operation as an opportunity for self-correction. “This is an opportunity for us to prepare ourselves ahead of ember months. Road safety is everybody’s business. Our roads can only be safe if drivers and passengers do their parts while FRSC does its part.”

Implications

The success of FRSC Operation Total Compliance in Anambra carries significant implications for public safety, economic productivity, and the state’s transport sector. Road crashes in Nigeria cost the economy billions annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, and infrastructure damage. By clamping down on these violations, the FRSC aims to lower fatality rates and instil greater compliance among commercial and private drivers alike, potentially influencing behaviour across the South-East region.

What Happens Next

FRSC officials have indicated continued monitoring and follow-up operations beyond the initial three days. Motorists are expected to regularise their documents, install functional speed limiters, and adhere strictly to loading protocols. Mobile courts will continue to prosecute offenders, while public sensitisation campaigns are set to intensify as the ember months draw closer.

Conclusion

As Nigeria grapples with the persistent challenge of road traffic safety, operations like the FRSC Operation Total Compliance in Anambra serve as a timely reminder that safer roads require collective responsibility. The iNews Times will continue to monitor developments and hold stakeholders accountable in the quest for zero road deaths in the state and beyond.
