Tight Security Measures Introduced as Imoka Festival and Political Party Primaries Hold Across the State.

AWKA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Imoka Festival Security Alert has dominated public attention in Anambra State following fresh warnings issued by the Police Command ahead of the Imoka Festival celebrations and multiple political party primaries scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The Anambra State Police Command said it had intensified security operations across strategic locations in the state to prevent violence, maintain public order, and ensure peaceful conduct during both the traditional festivities and politically sensitive activities taking place simultaneously in different communities.

The development comes amid growing concerns over crowd control, political tension, and possible security breaches that often accompany large cultural gatherings and intra-party political contests in parts of the state.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Imoka Festival remains one of the most prominent traditional celebrations in parts of Anambra State, attracting indigenes, visitors, cultural enthusiasts, and political figures from within and outside the region.

The festival is widely associated with cultural displays, community processions, social gatherings, and heightened commercial activities. However, large gatherings during festive periods have also historically raised concerns about traffic congestion, public disorder, and security risks.

This year’s celebration coincides with political party primaries being conducted across different locations in Anambra, creating an unusual convergence of political mobilisation and cultural festivities on the same day.

Security analysts note that such overlapping events often place enormous pressure on law enforcement agencies, especially in managing movement, intelligence gathering, and crowd behaviour.

Key Developments

In a statement issued on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, had activated enhanced security deployments across critical areas of the state.

According to him, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and tactical commanders were directed to personally supervise operations within their jurisdictions to guarantee effective policing and adequate protection of lives and property.

Ikenga stated that the police-led joint security team specifically warned against weapon brandishing, acts of intimidation, violence, and attacks on individuals or groups during the celebrations and political activities.

The Command also cautioned residents against actions capable of creating panic or provoking unrest, stressing that indiscriminate erection of canopies and structures that obstruct traffic flow or hinder movement would not be tolerated.

“The team further cautioned against any conduct capable of inciting unrest or threatening public peace as well as indiscriminate erection of canopies or structures in ways that obstruct traffic flow or hinder public movement,” the statement read.

The police urged political actors, supporters, festival participants, and residents to conduct themselves peacefully and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Residents and community leaders in parts of Anambra have welcomed the heightened security presence, describing it as necessary considering the scale of activities expected across the state.

A community stakeholder in Awka who spoke with The iNews Times said the simultaneous conduct of political primaries and cultural celebrations required “serious coordination and preventive security measures.”

“We have seen situations where excitement during festivals or political gatherings escalates into clashes. The warning by the police is timely because the state cannot afford avoidable tension,” he said.

Some transport operators also expressed support for the directive against traffic obstruction, noting that unauthorized structures and road blockages during celebrations often disrupt movement and business activities.

Political observers, meanwhile, urged party supporters to avoid inflammatory conduct capable of escalating tensions during the primaries.

Implications

The Imoka Festival Security Alert reflects broader concerns about public safety management during periods where political and cultural activities intersect in Nigeria.

Security experts believe the success or failure of security operations during the events could influence public confidence in the preparedness of law enforcement agencies in Anambra State.

The development also highlights the increasing need for stronger collaboration between traditional institutions, political stakeholders, and security agencies in managing large-scale gatherings.

For the police, maintaining peace throughout the celebrations and political exercises will be critical in preventing incidents capable of triggering wider unrest or damaging the state’s public image.

What Happens Next

Security agencies are expected to maintain surveillance and strategic deployments throughout the duration of the events across affected communities.

Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or security concerns to the nearest police station or relevant security formation.

Authorities are also expected to closely monitor compliance with directives regarding public conduct, movement, and traffic management during the festivities and party primaries.

Observers believe the overall outcome of the operations will likely shape future security planning for major public events in Anambra State.

Conclusion

As Anambra hosts both the Imoka Festival celebrations and political party primaries, the emphasis on security preparedness underscores the delicate balance between cultural expression, political participation, and public safety.

The warnings issued by the Police Command signal a proactive attempt to prevent disorder and reassure residents that law enforcement agencies remain committed to protecting lives and property throughout the high-profile events.

For many residents, the hope remains that the celebrations and political activities will conclude peacefully without incidents capable of overshadowing the significance of the day.
