…the Strait of Hormuz tensions have intensified amid broader geopolitical disagreements between the US and Iran.

Washington, D.C., United States — The iNews Times reports that Strait of Hormuz tensions remain at the centre of global attention as United States President Donald Trump expressed optimism that Washington and Tehran would ultimately reach what he described as a “great deal.”

Speaking during an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Trump maintained that despite the ongoing strain surrounding the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the United States is negotiating from a position of strength.

The Strait of Hormuz tensions have intensified amid broader geopolitical disagreements between the US and Iran, particularly over economic sanctions, regional security, and maritime operations in the Gulf.

“They have no choice,” Trump says

Addressing the state of negotiations, Trump said Iran would have no alternative but to send representatives to the table.

“They have no choice but to send them. What I think is that we’re going to end up with a great deal. I think it’s got – I think they have no choice,” Trump said during the televised interview.

His remarks come as Strait of Hormuz tensions continue to affect global energy markets, given the waterway’s importance as one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a narrow maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant percentage of the world’s crude oil shipments passes through this corridor daily, making any disruption a matter of international concern.

In his comments, Trump also doubled down on his position that the United States would not lift what he described as a blockade until a formal agreement is reached with Iran.

“The blockade has been a tremendous success,” Trump added.

The reference to a blockade aligns with ongoing economic pressure measures imposed by Washington, aimed at compelling Tehran to return to negotiations under terms favourable to the United States.

Strait of Hormuz tensions have historically been linked to sanctions and countermeasures between both countries, with maritime security frequently cited as a flashpoint in US-Iran relations.

According to Trump, the United States currently holds a strong negotiating advantage.

He emphasised that Washington’s strategy is designed to secure a comprehensive deal, suggesting that economic pressure has strengthened America’s leverage.

Strait of Hormuz tensions have often coincided with diplomatic manoeuvring between the two nations. Analysts note that public statements by political leaders can influence both domestic and international perceptions of ongoing negotiations.

While Trump projected confidence, Iranian officials have in the past insisted on reciprocal concessions before entering substantive talks.

The Strait of Hormuz tensions carry significant implications for global oil supply and international trade. Energy markets are highly sensitive to instability in the region, and even rhetorical escalations can trigger fluctuations in oil prices.

The waterway is widely regarded as one of the most strategically vital chokepoints in the global energy system. Any prolonged disruption could impact shipping lanes, insurance premiums, and fuel costs worldwide.

Observers say that resolving Strait of Hormuz tensions through diplomatic engagement would reduce uncertainty in global markets and ease concerns among major oil-importing nations.

Although Trump expressed optimism about achieving a “great deal,” he did not provide specific details regarding the framework of the potential agreement.

Historically, US-Iran negotiations have revolved around nuclear policy, sanctions relief, and regional security arrangements. Whether the current Strait of Hormuz tensions will culminate in a renewed agreement remains to be seen.

Foreign policy analysts argue that durable agreements typically require mutual concessions, verification mechanisms, and international oversight.
