Anambra-based federal university records 51,487 applicants as competition for tertiary admission intensifies nationwide.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | UNIZIK 2025 UTME Ranking has placed Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka https://unizik.edu.ng fifth among Nigeria’s ten most-sought-after universities in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, according to figures released by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The disclosure was made in Abuja by JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, during the 2026 policy meeting on admissions into tertiary institutions, where application statistics revealed a sharp concentration of candidates in a handful of highly competitive universities.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Every year, the UTME serves as the gateway for millions of Nigerian students seeking admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The distribution of first-choice applications is widely regarded as a barometer of institutional reputation, academic stability, infrastructure strength, and perceived admission prospects.

In recent years, institutions located in urban centres and academically established regions have consistently dominated the rankings.

The latest UNIZIK 2025 UTME Ranking reinforces this pattern, reflecting strong demand for federal and state universities in Lagos, Kwara, Oyo, Ekiti, and Anambra states.

Key Developments

According to the official data presented at the policy meeting, Lagos State University emerged as the most sought-after institution with 70,080 applicants.

It was followed by University of Lagos with 58,645 applications and University of Ilorin with 56,758.

Federal University Oye-Ekiti ranked fourth with 52,108 candidates.

Under the UNIZIK 2025 UTME Ranking, Nnamdi Azikiwe University secured the fifth position with 51,487 applicants, surpassing University of Ibadan, which recorded 47,571 and ranked sixth.

University of Nigeria Nsukka followed in seventh place with 46,273 applicants.

University of Benin came eighth with 45,868, while Obafemi Awolowo University ranked ninth with 45,777.

The tenth position went to Federal University Lafia with 42,962 applicants.

The data underscores the fierce competition among leading institutions and highlights the growing pressure on available admission spaces.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Reacting to the development, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, Director of Information and Public Relations at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, described the UNIZIK 2025 UTME Ranking as evidence of the institution’s rising academic influence.

He expressed optimism that the university could climb even higher when JAMB releases the final 2026 admission policy results at the end of the current admission cycle.

“We are confident that UNIZIK will not miss the Top 3 in the near future,” Attah said. “The surge in applications reflects the stability, peace, and progressive leadership currently guiding the university.”

He attributed the upward trend to reforms and consolidation under Vice Chancellor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, alongside the Governing Council led by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Barrister Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi.

According to him, the institution has strengthened its academic calendar, enhanced research facilities, and reinforced its reputation for producing employable graduates.

Education analysts who spoke to The iNews Times noted that institutional stability has become a critical factor for candidates and parents, particularly after years of industrial actions that disrupted academic calendars in some universities.

Implications

The UNIZIK 2025 UTME Ranking carries broader implications for Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.

First, it highlights sustained confidence in federal and state universities located in commercially vibrant or academically established regions.

Second, it reflects shifting student priorities toward institutions perceived as stable, research-driven, and career-oriented.

Third, the clustering of applications among a few universities may intensify admission competition, leaving thousands of qualified candidates without placement.

For policymakers, the trend raises fresh questions about capacity expansion, infrastructure investment, and equitable distribution of educational opportunities across the country.

What Happens Next

As the 2025 admission process unfolds, attention will shift to cut-off marks, departmental quotas, and final placement outcomes.

Universities are expected to align their admission thresholds with JAMB’s approved guidelines following the policy meeting.

For Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the focus will be on converting strong application numbers into quality admissions while sustaining institutional reforms that continue to attract candidates nationwide.

Education stakeholders will also monitor whether emerging universities can narrow the gap in future UTME cycles.

Conclusion

The UNIZIK 2025 UTME Ranking not only affirms Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s growing appeal but also reflects the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s competitive higher education system.

As application figures continue to shape perceptions of academic prestige and institutional stability, the coming months will determine how these numbers translate into admission outcomes and long-term academic impact.

For readers seeking authoritative updates on education trends and policy shifts, The iNews Times will continue to track developments across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
