…Secret Service working with the Metropolitan Police to determine circumstances surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting.

Washington, United States — The iNews Times | The White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting has triggered a full-scale investigation by the United States Secret Service https://www.secretservice.gov after gunfire erupted near a security screening area during the high-profile annual event at the Washington Hilton.

Authorities confirmed that the shooting occurred close to the main magnetometer checkpoint used to screen invited guests attending the prestigious dinner, an event that traditionally brings together the U.S. president, senior administration officials, journalists, celebrities, and political figures.

In a statement released Sunday, the Secret Service said it is working in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting.

Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the United States Secret Service, confirmed via the agency’s official X account that all protected individuals, including the president and first lady, were safe following the incident.

“We will provide updates as they become available and confirm information. Our teams are on the ground assessing the situation and investigating. All of our protectees are safe,” Guglielmi stated.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting. However, officials have yet to release detailed information about the motive, identity of the suspect, or the number and condition of any individuals affected.

The incident prompted an immediate security response, with officers stationed around the perimeter quickly securing the area. Guests were temporarily restricted as law enforcement assessed potential threats.

Security experts note that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is classified as a National Special Security Event-like gathering due to the presence of high-level protectees, even if not formally designated as such every year. The rapid containment of the situation underscores the layered security protocols typically in place at such events.

The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is one of Washington’s most visible gatherings, symbolising the relationship between the press and the presidency. Held each year at the Washington Hilton, the event attracts intense media coverage and heightened security planning.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting has therefore raised renewed concerns about security vulnerabilities at large-scale public events in the U.S. capital, particularly those attended by the president and senior government officials.

Security analysts say that even incidents occurring near, rather than inside, a secure perimeter can prompt procedural reviews. While officials confirmed that protective details functioned as intended, investigations will likely examine perimeter control, crowd management, and pre-event threat assessments.

Washington, D.C., remains one of the most security-intensive cities in the United States, especially during high-profile political events. However, incidents like the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting highlight the challenges of balancing public access with stringent protective measures.

Experts suggest that the outcome of the ongoing probe may influence future event security frameworks, including adjustments to screening zones, surveillance deployment, and coordination between federal and local agencies.

The United States Secret Service has emphasised that its investigation remains active and that further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available.

Officials were quick to reassure the public that all protectees were secure and unaffected. The swift confirmation was seen as critical in preventing misinformation from spreading during a highly sensitive moment.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting.
