Road safety agency intensifies traffic enforcement, emergency response, and highway surveillance ahead of festive celebrations.

AWKA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol operations have commenced across Anambra State following the deployment of more than 210 personnel by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) https://www.frsc.gov.ng to manage traffic flow and strengthen road safety during the festive period.

The deployment, announced by the Anambra State Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhanuo, includes both Regular and Special Marshals tasked with ensuring safer highways, reducing traffic congestion, and providing rapid emergency response across major routes in the state.

According to the FRSC, the Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol operation officially commenced on May 25 and is expected to continue through May 31, 2026, as authorities prepare for increased vehicular movement associated with the Muslim celebration.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Eid El-Kabir festive period is traditionally associated with heavy road traffic across Nigeria as families, travellers, and commercial operators move between cities and communities for celebrations.

Over the years, the FRSC has routinely introduced special patrol operations during major festive seasons to reduce road accidents, enforce traffic regulations, and improve emergency response capabilities.

Anambra State, particularly busy commercial centres such as Onitsha and major interstate routes, often witnesses significant traffic pressure during festive periods due to increased transportation activities.

Road safety authorities have repeatedly expressed concerns over dangerous driving practices, speeding, wrongful overtaking, and poor vehicle maintenance, which remain among the leading causes of road crashes nationwide.

The latest Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol is therefore part of broader efforts aimed at preventing avoidable accidents and improving public safety during the celebrations.

Key Developments

Speaking on the operation, Bridget Asekhanuo disclosed that the FRSC has fully mobilised personnel and operational equipment to ensure efficient traffic management throughout the exercise.

According to her, the Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol is designed to enhance public enlightenment, reduce traffic crashes, minimise fatalities and injuries, and facilitate immediate clearance of road obstructions across highways in the state.

The command has also deployed patrol vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks, motorcycles, radar guns, breathalysers, and other logistics to strengthen enforcement and emergency response operations.

Special attention, she noted, is being directed toward high-traffic areas including the Bridge Head axis in Onitsha and other strategic routes known for congestion during festive periods.

The FRSC further disclosed that officers participating in the Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol would focus on traffic violations considered major contributors to road crashes.

These include speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, overloading, lane indiscipline, use of mobile phones while driving, operation of mechanically deficient vehicles, use of worn-out tyres, and passenger manifest violations.

To strengthen enforcement, the command also announced the deployment of mobile courts for speedy prosecution of traffic offenders during the operation.

“In addition, all emergency response and rescue teams have been placed on maximum alert to ensure prompt intervention whenever necessary,” the sector commander stated.

The iNews Times gathered that the FRSC will collaborate closely with the Nigeria Police Force, the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency, and the OCHA Brigade to strengthen security coordination and traffic management throughout the celebrations.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Transport operators and commercial drivers reacting to the Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol welcomed the increased road safety presence, especially along major highways prone to congestion and accidents during festive periods.

Some motorists described the deployment as necessary in view of rising traffic pressure often experienced during public holidays and religious celebrations.

Road safety advocates also praised the decision to place emergency rescue teams on high alert, noting that rapid intervention remains critical in reducing fatalities during accidents.

Meanwhile, some commuters urged motorists to cooperate fully with enforcement agencies by obeying traffic rules and avoiding reckless driving behaviours capable of endangering lives.

Implications

The intensified Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol reflects growing concerns among authorities over road safety challenges during festive travel periods.

Analysts believe effective traffic management and stronger enforcement could significantly reduce accidents, ease congestion, and improve emergency response outcomes across major highways.

The operation also highlights the continuing need for improved driver education, vehicle maintenance culture, and public compliance with traffic regulations nationwide.

Beyond enforcement, the initiative underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration in maintaining public safety during periods of increased travel and commercial activities.

What Happens Next

FRSC personnel are expected to continue highway patrols, public enlightenment campaigns, and enforcement operations throughout the Eid El-Kabir celebration period.

Authorities will also monitor major routes closely for traffic congestion, road obstructions, and emergency incidents requiring immediate intervention.

The command is meanwhile expected to sustain coordination with security agencies and traffic management bodies as travel activities peak in the coming days.

Conclusion

The launch of the Eid El-Kabir Special Patrol in Anambra signals a renewed effort by road safety authorities to prevent accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

As motorists and travellers prepare for the celebrations, the success of the operation may ultimately depend on public cooperation, responsible driving habits, and strict adherence to traffic regulations across the state.
