Widows Urged to Break Silence as Harmful Practices Persist Despite Existing Laws.

AWKA, Anambra State – The iNews Times | The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) https://fida.org.ng, Anambra State Chapter, has intensified calls for greater Anambra widows rights protection and economic empowerment, urging affected women not to suffer in silence but to seek immediate legal redress when their rights are violated.

This renewed advocacy comes as the organisation marked the 2026 International Widows’ Day, highlighting the ongoing struggles of widows amid deeply rooted cultural challenges in the state and across Nigeria.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

International Widows’ Day, observed annually on June 23, serves as a global platform to spotlight the vulnerabilities faced by millions of widows, particularly in developing nations where harmful traditional practices often prevail. In Anambra State, widows have historically endured disinheritance, property grabbing, and degrading widowhood rites despite progressive legislation. FIDA’s intervention builds on existing frameworks, including the state’s Malpractices Against Widows and Widowers (Prohibition) Law of 2005 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2017.

Key Developments

State Chairperson Barrister Amara Muojeke delivered a strong message reminding widows of the free legal services offered by FIDA across the country. She emphasised the need for stronger protection of widows’ rights alongside meaningful economic empowerment initiatives to enable them live with dignity and independence. Muojeke also stressed that financially independent widows are better equipped to care for their children and resist various forms of exploitation.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Barrister Amara Muojeke, who also serves as a leader in the NBA Women Forum, stated that the 2026 theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Empowerment of Widows,” is particularly relevant to Nigeria and Anambra State. “June 23 every year is set aside globally to draw attention to the plight of millions of widows and advocate for the protection of their welfare and fundamental rights,” she said.

She further referenced constitutional guarantees, noting, “The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the dignity of every human person under Section 34. Widows deserve fairness, respect and protection under the law.” Muojeke highlighted Anambra’s specific laws that criminalise widowhood abuses and prescribe penalties, including imprisonment.

Implications

The push for enhanced Anambra widows rights carries profound social, economic, and legal weight. Persistent harmful practices not only violate fundamental human rights but also perpetuate cycles of poverty, as dispossessed widows struggle to provide for their families. Economic empowerment programmes could unlock the potential of this often-marginalised group, contributing to broader community development and reducing gender-based vulnerabilities. This advocacy also puts pressure on enforcement agencies to move beyond paper laws to visible action.

What Happens Next

FIDA is expected to scale up its legal aid outreach and awareness campaigns across Anambra communities. Stakeholders anticipate greater collaboration between the organisation, state government, traditional rulers, and civil society groups to strengthen implementation of existing laws. Widows are encouraged to utilise the free legal support channels while monitoring authorities ensure stricter compliance with protective statutes.

Conclusion

As The iNews Times continues to champion issues of social justice, FIDA’s timely intervention on Anambra widows rights reinforces the urgent need for a society where every widow can live with dignity and economic security. This renewed focus not only honours the spirit of International Widows’ Day but also challenges all stakeholders to translate legal provisions into real-life protection and empowerment for vulnerable women across the state.
