Aggrieved party members allege irregularities, vote allocation, and absence of accreditation during Abia Central senatorial primary.

UMUAHIA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Abia APC Primary Election controversy has intensified after stakeholders in the Abia Central Senatorial District rejected the outcome of the All Progressives Congress senatorial primary, insisting that no legitimate election took place across several wards in the district.

The aggrieved stakeholders, led by Uche Onyejekwe and Ego Nwamuo, accused some party figures of hijacking the process and allegedly allocating fictitious votes in favour of preferred candidates during the disputed exercise held on May 18, 2026.

In a protest letter addressed to the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress https://www.allprogressivescongress.org, the stakeholders described the exercise as a “farcical display of brigandage” and urged the party to investigate what they called a serious breach of internal democratic procedures.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Abia APC Primary Election was expected to serve as a major test of internal democracy within the ruling party ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Party faithful in the Abia Central Senatorial District had reportedly welcomed the adoption of the direct primary option, believing it would provide ordinary members an opportunity to actively participate in selecting the party’s senatorial candidate.

However, tensions began emerging shortly after the exercise, with complaints surfacing from several wards alleging absence of electoral officials, lack of accreditation, and non-conduct of voting processes.

The latest protest now threatens to deepen internal divisions within the APC in Abia State as political alignments ahead of 2027 continue taking shape.

Key Developments

In their protest letter titled “Irregularities, Brigandage, and Breach of Electoral Process in Abia Central Senatorial Primary,” the stakeholders alleged that the process was manipulated by desperate political actors determined to impose predetermined outcomes.

According to the petitioners, many party members waited for hours in their wards without seeing officials from the Seven-man APC National Assembly Primary Election Committee, personnel from the Independent National Electoral Commission, or security operatives.

The protesters argued that despite the absence of any voting process in several locations, results were later announced with what they described as “outrageous and bewildering figures.”

The controversy surrounding the Abia APC Primary Election further escalated after Emeka Atumah was announced as the winner of the disputed primary.

“We are convinced and make bold to say that there was a predetermined outcome from the beginning, given that figures were allegedly written and allocated behind closed doors,” the stakeholders stated.

They further questioned the role of one Hon. Thomas Nkoro, who they claimed announced results despite allegedly not being a member of the official committee sent from Abuja.

“The only thing we heard was that some already prepared results were announced to the public by one Hon Thomas Nkoro, who was not a member of the Seven-man Committee from the APC Headquarters, Abuja,” the protesters alleged.

The aggrieved stakeholders specifically mentioned wards including Oloko Ward 2, Usaka Ward in Ikwuano LGA, Osisioma Wards 2, 3, 8 and 9, Ntighauzo Primary School, and Okporo Ahaba Ward 1 as locations where they claimed no voting exercise took place.

They also challenged anyone disputing their claims to provide video evidence proving that proper accreditation and balloting occurred in the affected areas.

Reactions from Stakeholders

The Abia APC Primary Election dispute has generated fresh conversations within political circles in Abia State, with observers warning that unresolved internal crises could weaken party unity ahead of future elections.

Some party members sympathetic to the protesters argued that transparent primaries remain essential for strengthening public confidence and maintaining credibility within political parties.

Political analysts noted that allegations of vote allocation and non-conduct of primaries have historically triggered legal disputes and factional tensions within Nigerian political parties.

Meanwhile, some APC loyalists urged the national leadership to urgently intervene and conduct an independent investigation to prevent the crisis from escalating further.

The protesters maintained that party faithful across the affected wards are prepared to testify personally that no primary election was conducted in their areas.

Implications

The growing controversy surrounding the Abia APC Primary Election could have significant implications for party cohesion and political stability within the APC structure in Abia State.

Analysts believe unresolved disputes over candidate selection processes often create long-term divisions capable of weakening electoral performance during general elections.

The allegations may also increase pressure on the APC national leadership to demonstrate stronger commitment to internal democracy and transparent electoral procedures.

Beyond party politics, the controversy highlights persistent concerns surrounding the credibility of primary elections and internal governance within political parties across Nigeria.

What Happens Next

Attention is now expected to shift toward the APC national leadership and whether it will launch an investigation into the allegations raised by the aggrieved stakeholders.

Observers say the party may face increasing pressure to review the outcome of the disputed primary or organise a fresh exercise in areas where voting allegedly did not occur.

The possibility of legal action or internal appeals cannot also be ruled out if the grievances remain unresolved in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

The escalating dispute surrounding the Abia APC Primary Election has once again exposed the fragile nature of internal party politics and the high stakes already shaping preparations for the 2027 elections.

As calls for investigation and possible sanctions continue growing, the APC leadership may now face a critical test of its commitment to transparency, internal democracy, and party unity in Abia State.
