ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani to immediately release former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Atiku described El-Rufai’s continued detention as “cruel, unjustifiable, and deeply troubling,” particularly as Muslims across Nigeria prepare for the Eid al-Adha celebrations.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president condemned what he described as the use of state institutions to intimidate perceived political opponents.
- According to Atiku, the detention of the former Kaduna governor runs contrary to democratic principles, civil liberties, and the rule of law.
He further warned against actions capable of eroding public confidence in democratic governance, insisting that no Nigerian should be denied freedom because of political disagreements.
The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also urged the Federal Government and Kaduna State authorities to ensure that justice, fairness, and due process prevail in handling the matter.
The development has further heightened political tensions as reactions continue to trail the reported detention of El-Rufai ahead of the 2027 political season.
