…the convict collected N1 million from his victim, promising to secure him a job in the Federal Civil Service.

The iNews Times reports that a staff member of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, Elvis Simon Okerenyi, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment for defrauding a job seeker, Titus Tavershima, of N1 million under the guise of securing employment in the Federal Civil Service.

The conviction followed a plea bargain agreement between Okerenyi and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Justice S.C. Oriji of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sentenced Okerenyi after he pleaded guilty to a single count charge. The court however gave Okerenyi the option of paying a fine of N200,000.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay N350,000 in restitution to the victim.

Okerenyi, according to ICPC’s investigations, collected N1 million from Tavershima, promising to secure him a job in the Federal Civil Service.

But the commission however, found that Okerenyi had no such connections or influence to deliver on his promise.

His actions contravened Section 320 of the Penal Code and are punishable under Section 322 of the same code.

Initially, Okerenyi faced seven charges, but these were reduced to a single count after the plea bargain agreement.

The ICPC’s spokesman, Demola Bakare, stated that the commission remains committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring that those who engage in such acts are held accountable.
