Unity Congress Delivers Decisive Victory as Youth Council Charts Fresh Path in Soludo’s Anambra.

AWKA, Anambra – The iNews Times | Comrade IKC Onuorah has been elected the new Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) https://www.nationalyouthcouncilofnigeria.org, Anambra State Chapter, in a keenly contested but peaceful election that underscores the maturing democratic culture within the state’s youth leadership structures.

Onuorah’s victory at the 2026 Unity Congress marks a significant transition for the council, coming at a time when Anambra’s youth are expected to play pivotal roles in the state’s development agenda under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The National Youth Council of Nigeria serves as the apex youth body, coordinating youth activities across the country and acting as a platform for leadership training and civic engagement. In Anambra, the council has historically been a vibrant yet sometimes fractious organisation, with past elections marred by prolonged disputes and late-night wranglings that often undermined its credibility.

The 2026 Unity Congress, held in the state capital, Awka, represented a deliberate effort to reset this narrative through transparency and inclusivity.

Key Developments

The election saw 140 delegates participate, with Onuorah polling 75 votes to defeat his closest rival, Nonso Nwebili, who secured 63 votes. The process followed an earlier harmonisation that produced other members of the new executive council.

These include Comr. Thankgod Nwafor as Deputy Chairman, Comr. Uchenna Ejeri as Vice Chairman (South), Comr. Menkiti Oliseli as Vice Chairman (North), Comr. Akuwenze Chukwunonso as Vice Chairman (Central), Comr. Chimaobi Kingsley Egwu as Secretary, and Comr. Chinonso Onyeanusi as Public Relations Officer, among others.

Initially, 160 delegates had been expected, drawn from the 21 local government area branches and various youth organisations.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Outgoing Chairman, Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election. “What we did today is a major advancement since the history of this Council,” he said. “We have had elections extend deep into the night, and even prolonged for months due to interests. But this time, we are decisive on ensuring that the will of members of the Council prevailed.”

Obi also commended Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Aghamba, for their support.

Chairman of the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Youths, Dr. Augustine Ike, represented by Vincent Okoro-Orji, urged delegates to elect credible leaders and assured the new executive of legislative backing.

Pioneer Chairman Elder Obunikem Asuzu and former NYCN leader Dr. Frank Maduka emphasised unity, describing the council as “one family” where service must align with the constitution.

President-General of the Anambra State Town Unions’ Council (ASTUC) Youth Wing, Comrade Ken Okoli, applauded the credible process and expressed confidence in the incoming leadership.

Implications

The peaceful transition carries strong political and social significance in Anambra, a state known for its entrepreneurial youth population and active civic engagement. A unified and credible NYCN is better positioned to partner with the Soludo administration on youth empowerment, skills development, and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Analysts believe this outcome could reduce youth restiveness and channel youthful energy towards productive nation-building, especially as the state pushes its development blueprint.

What Happens Next

The new leadership under Comrade Onuorah is expected to immediately begin consultations with stakeholders, youth groups, and government officials to define its priorities. Observers anticipate an all-inclusive approach that builds on the foundation of the outgoing administration while introducing fresh strategies for youth value reorientation and economic empowerment.

Conclusion

As Anambra’s youth council turns a new page with Onuorah at the helm, the successful conduct of the 2026 Unity Congress reinforces the belief that transparent leadership recruitment is possible within Nigeria’s youth organisations. The iNews Times will continue to monitor developments as the new executive works to justify the confidence reposed in it by Anambra youths.
