ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, on Sunday paid a courtesy visit to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where discussions centred on the future of Nigeria and the need for national unity.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was accompanied by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the national coordinator of the Obidient Movement; Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the LP’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate; and Segun Adebanjo.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle,Peter Obi revealed that the meeting focused on “how all of us can live in unity, love, fairness and justice progressively together.”
Peter Obi expressed confidence in the possibility of assembling a capable team driven by compassion and dedication to build what he described as “a new Nigeria that is possible.”
“Today, I, with Dr @YunusaTanko, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour @GRVlagos and Segun Adebanjo, visited President Obasanjo on a courtesy visit. Thereafter, we visited the new Olubadan of Ibadan, Kabiyesi Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja,” Obi stated.
“In both visits, we were fortunate to discuss the state of our nation and how all of us can live in unity, love, fairness and justice progressively together. The meetings make me believe that the coming together of a competent team with capacity, compassion, and commitment to build a new Nigeria is possible.”
After leaving Abeokuta, Peter Obi and his entourage proceeded to Ibadan, where they met with the Olubadan designate, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence.
During the Ibadan visit, Peter Obi lauded the contributions of Ibadan indigenes, both at home and in the diaspora, to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
He emphasised the city’s enduring importance to the country’s history, saying:
“Ibadanland has always played a pivotal role in both the socio-economic and political history of the country. Its place in the history of the country cannot be ignored. Ibadan is home to all because of the hospitable nature of the indigenes.”
Obi’s courtesy calls come at a time when calls for national cohesion and good governance continue to dominate Nigeria’s political discourse. The Labour Party leader underscored that unity, justice and fairness remain central to the nation’s progress, stressing that only through collective effort can the vision of a better Nigeria be realised.
